What is TLP? Who was Khadim Hussain Rizvi? Who created it? Why was it created? Is it a threat to Pakistan or good for it?
Recently, the government of Pakistan banned the Tehreek I Labaik Party under the anti-terrorism act, 1997, after the violent protests that erupted after the arrest of its leader Saad Hussain Rizvi. The protests took place in the country because the banned party was demanding the withdrawal of the French Ambassador from Pakistan in response to the French president Emmanuel Macron's anti-Islam speech.
Who was Khadim Hussain Rizvi?
Khadim Hussain Rizvi was a
government-appointed cleric at a mosque in Lahore. What led to the zenith of Khadim Hussain was his Tehreek Rihai Mumtaz Qadri ( movement to free Mumtaz Qadri). Mumtaz Qadri was the person and a member of TLP, who gunned down the then Governor of Punjab Salman Taseer on the blasphemous charges. The party was founded in 2015 by Khadim Hussain Rizvi himself, but it emerged on the national scene in 2017, and later in 2020. On both occasions, the party had launched massive demonstrations in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The 2017 Faizabad sit-in led it to prominence.
What was the reason behind the creation of TLP? Why are religious parties more powerful in Pakistan?
It is known to everyone that the TLP was helped and supported by the Pakistani establishment. The TLP was a political project to target the PML-N government in 2018 general elections. They used it for their political interests. It is because Pakistan has a long history of using religious groups and parties for its political and diplomatic gains. For examples, when the Soviet Union ( now Russia ) attacked Afghanistan, Pakistan with the help of America and Saudi Arabia, created Mujahideen to wage jihad in Afghanistan. The Mujahideen were trained and nurtured on the soil of Pakistan. They successfully disintegrated the Soviet Union. When America left Afghanistan, Pakistan helped and supported the Afghan Taliban to form their government in Kabul. In this way, the ties between the Afghan Taliban and Pakistan cemented. However, the Taliban were created to fight the external enemy. But the reason behind the formation of TLP was not external, but internal. And that was to weaken the PML-N. The TLP, with its powerful demonstrations, caused serious damage to the PML-N. The establishment time and again nurtured the religious forces for its vested interest. This is why its reliance on the religious groups has strengthened the power of religious leaders. They are more powerful now than they used to be.
Is the TLP a threat to Pakistan?
It is a threat, indeed, in terms that it destroys the public properties, causes public inconvenience, endangers the lives of common people, which is utterly unconstitutional. Secondly, it tarnishes the international image of the country. It sends a message to the world that Pakistan is not a safe country for tourists, investment and tolerance. Lastly, it a threat to the progress of the country, because it has demanded the French Ambassador's withdrawal now. So, there are chances that it may demand, though in the future, the exclusion of Australia, China, India, Germany, US and other countries’ diplomats. Cutting diplomatic ties with a country is near to impossible as the millions of Pakistani diaspora is living in above mentioned countries. This will seriously affect the economy of Pakistan.
So, how to deal with this rising threat ?
The only way is to resolve issues though dialogues. Flexing muscle against each other would serve no purpose. Though the demands of the TLP are legitimate, but the means it has adopted run counter to what the religion of peace has taught us. Hence, both the government and the TLP should try to bridge their differences and hammer out viable solution. This is the only way. Otherwise, the country will be on the cusp of a failing state at the hands of religious extremists and hardliners.
