🚫 fraud alert 🤬
Thieves pose as authentic companies and lure victims into paying fees in anticipation of receiving something of greater value, like a loan, credit card, grant, investment or inheritance money. The victim sends money to the scammer using a money transfer service, but then receives nothing in return. These loans, credit cards, grants, investment or inheritance sums never actually existed. And once the scammers get their money, They are never heard from again.📵

Nasreen is an ambitious lady who is born and bred in a village. She got early education in her village and
got higher education in multan. After that she got married and started teaching in a local school to provide
children with education.
Once nasreen got a message on her phone telling she had won 20,000 Rs via Benazir Income Support
Programme. The message asked her to share her national identity card number with them in order to claim
the money. Nasreen was a good user of technology and well educated, but still she send her national identity
card number to that number because she was sure that Benazir Income Support Programe was well

who texted her, it was not the official number but just an ordinary number.
A few days later nasreen recieved a call from NADRA office telling her that her passport was ready to be
collected which she had applied for. This shocked nasreen a bit as she had not applied for any passport.
She consulted her husband who then contacted NADRA and upon investigation it was discovered that
some lady made an illegal passport for her using Nasreen's credentials. Due to not confirming about the
scheme prior, she almost fell to the scam. A proper guidance would have helped her from avoiding such
incident. This all could be prevented if there was a propoer awareness campaign in the village about this
kind of scam. This is where our project comes in handy, it will create awareness about scams and protect
identity of people.

Awareness About Scams In Pakistan🌍
In Pakistan, there is a boom in technology and with a rising wave of technology, everyone now has a mobile phone. With mobile phones, come different scams. A scam is any fraudulent business or scheme that takes money or other goods from an unsuspecting person. With the world becoming more connected thanks to the Internet, online scams have increased, and it’s often up to you to help stay cautious with people on the Internet. Everyone has almost received a scam call, message, or event once in his lifetime. Everyone is affected by this in one way or another.

Various scams include; Attempts to gain personal information, impersonating banks or organizations, threats or extortion, cash transfer or sending a code, and prize/lottery scams.

Scams in Pakistan mostly include; Bol news, Jeeto Pakistan prizes, providing free sim cards, fake police calls demanding ransom, Benazir income support program messages, and phone calls asking for bank information.

The main causes include illiteracy, greed for money, lack of awareness, sharing personal information, and data breaches. The people affected by scams include almost all the population, as almost all are vulnerable to scams and breaches of personal information. But the most affected people include illiterate people, people in the rural areas of Pakistan, and those people who do not keep their information private. The effects of scamming are that people are devoid of their money, and they share their private information unintentionally when they respond to a special request or reply to a message claiming they have won a prize. This information can be misused in various illegal activities such as money laundering, terrorist activities, fake identity can be created and misused. When anything bad happens that person is investigated and not the one who misused the information. The rural population of Pakistan includes about 62.56% of the total population of Pakistan. And the illiterate population in Pakistan has a percentage of about 42% with 58% population being literate. They use technology to some extent but don’t have full command over it and don’t know how to keep their information protected. So they become more vulnerable to such scams as scammers know how to manipulate them easily. Unfortunately, there is no recognized organization to overcome this scam campaign only government plays a little role and is active for some time to create awareness about a scam only when things escalate to a greater extent. But this awareness still doesn’t reach much of the population.

This project is researched by various methodologies. Firstly it is observed by personal experiences of myself and my colleagues. Most of us have received scam calls and messages multiple times. Then the experiences of family and friends who have been victimized through these scams. Then the research was extended to the national level. Scam stories of various incidents were studied and observed that were in news and on social media. Lastly, the research was done by talking to the rural population and asking them if they had experienced any scam-related activity. All this research focused on gaining insights into various scam activities going on in Pakistan defining them, getting to the root cause, and determining how people are affected by it. This research helped us in determining deeply about the problem, the factors causing its immense prevalence, and what our next step will be in order to provide the solution. If properly executed according to the plan and proper guidance, we will be able to create a stir in creating awareness about such scam activities going on around us and will help people to know when to share the information, whom to share information with, how much information to share and how to avoid such malicious activities. We will do so by doing a person-to-person campaign, making people aware of the problem, and proposing the solution. We will also be focusing on creating scam-alert content that would promote safety from scam-related activities.
