The Applied Linguistics Society (TALS) proudly presents the cinematic highlights of our Focus Group Discussion held in BS-IV Applied Linguistics on the thought-provoking theme:

This session was a space where students didn't just learn — they questioned, challenged, and led the conversation on one of the most pressing issues in language today.

**Highlights of Focus Group Discussion 🌟**

The Applied Linguistics Society (TALS) proudly marks another milestone with a successful Focus Group Discussion held in BS-IV Applied Linguistics on the theme:

**"Democratisation or Corruption of English: Analysing how the growth of Englishes online or in media platforms affects English offline"**

The discussion provided students a space to critically explore how digital and media spaces are reshaping English, and what the blurring of online and offline language boundaries means for learners, speakers, and educators.

The session was conducted under the supervision of **Dr Sumera Umrani**, whose guidance shaped the depth and direction of the discussion. We were also honoured by the presence of **Prof Dr Tariq Hassan Umrani, Director IELL** , whose attendance reflects the department's commitment to fostering critical academic dialogue.

A meaningful step towards a greener future 🌱

We were honored to host the Computer Systems Tech Club Society, Mehran University at the Institute of English Language and Literature (IELL), University of Sindh, for a collaborative plantation drive—marking a wonderful inter-university engagement.

This initiative reflects our shared commitment to environmental sustainability and community collaboration.

Alongside the plantation activity, our guests also visited the department and appreciated its eco-friendly environment, making the experience even more engaging and memorable.

Highlights of the TALS first session of 2026 ✨

The Applied Linguistics Society (TALS) successfully hosted its first insightful session of 2026, and what a remarkable start it was!

We were honoured to have Professor Dr Tariq Umrani lead an engaging discussion with students from all four batches. The session, themed around empowering young minds and shaping future linguistic leaders, explored the vital role of language in real-world contexts. From innovative teaching methods and communication strategies to language policies and speech therapy, Dr Umrani encouraged students to think and work beyond conventional boundaries.

A heartfelt thanks to Prof Dr Tariq Umrani for his invaluable time and for sharing his wealth of experience with our students. The enthusiasm and engagement from everyone present reaffirm the growing scope and critical importance of applied linguistics today.

The Applied Linguistics Society (TALS) successfully conducted its First Winter Webinar Session on 'Applied Linguistics Beyond the Classroom: Connecting Language, Society, and Identity.' The session was highly insightful and intellectually enriching, offering participants meaningful perspectives on the real-world applications of applied linguistics.

Our esteemed speaker, Mr. Muhammad Jameel Memon, shared valuable insights that enhanced critical discussion and deepened participants’ understanding of the relationship between language, identity, and society. With the active participation of 60+ attendees, the session became a truly impactful and engaging learning experience.
