Understanding Makharij: The Foundation of Tajweed

Makharij is the plural of Makhraj, meaning the precise points from which Arabic letters are articulated. These points may be located in the throat, tongue, lips, mouth, or nasal passage.
Learning the correct Makharij is one of the fundamental steps in Tajweed. When a letter is pronounced from an incorrect point of articulation, its sound may change—and in some cases, this can affect the meaning of a Qur’anic word.

The 5 Main Areas of Makharij

Scholars generally classify the articulation points into five major areas:

1. Al-Halq — The Throat
The throat is the articulation area for letters such as ء، ه، ع، ح، غ، خ.

2. Al-Lisan — The Tongue
The tongue is the most active articulation area. Different parts of the tongue—its base, middle, sides, and tip—produce a large number of Arabic letters.

3. Ash-Shafatan — The Two Lips
The lips are involved in the pronunciation of letters such as ب، م، و، ف.

4. Al-Jawf — The Empty Oral Cavity
The open space of the mouth and throat is the source of the prolonged Madd sounds.

5. Al-Khayshum — The Nasal Passage
The nasal passage is responsible for the characteristic nasal sound known as Ghunnah, particularly in certain Tajweed rules.

Why Are Makharij Important?

Correct pronunciation is not simply about making the letters sound beautiful. It is about preserving the words of the Qur’an accurately. Understanding where every letter comes from helps students develop clear pronunciation, stronger Tajweed, and confidence in Qur’an recitation.

At Majeed Quran Academy Online, we focus not only on reading the Qur’an but also on helping students understand and apply the rules of Tajweed step by step.

Learn the letter. Know its Makhraj. Perfect your recitation.
