COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) has initiated the idea of a Summer Camp to provide comprehensive training aimed at preparing students for success in their future endeavors. The Summer Camp is designed to spark innovation and empower individuals with cutting-edge tech skills. In this regard, the first summer camp, titled "Spatial Data Science: Innovations in Remote Sensing and GIS," was inaugurated on Monday, 15th July, by Prof. Dr. Sajid Qamar, Rector of CUI, and Prof. Dr. Sohail Ashgar, Incharge of the CUI Islamabad campus. Prof. Dr. Sajid Qamar appreciated the idea of the summer camp and credited Prof. Dr. Sohail Ashgar, Incharge of the CUI Islamabad Campus, for this great initiative. He highlighted the importance of Remote Sensing and GIS, noting its wide demand and scope, and commended the efforts of the Department of Meteorology.
Prof. Dr. Sohail Ashgar, while addressing the participants, emphasized the importance of the Summer Camp. He acknowledged that there was limited time for advertising the summer camps this year but assured that from next year, more time would be allocated for advertisements. He expressed the intention to plan and announce the summer camps much earlier. He also expressed a desire for more professionals to participate in such summer camps and mentioned plans to request nominations from different organizations. He credited the idea of the Summer Camp to the Rector and emphasized the need to establish stronger linkages between academia and industry through such initiatives. He also discussed the significance of the summer camp for college students, as it would help them become more familiar with the university environment and enhance their skillsets for freelancing. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems, and Meteorology as applied fields.
The Summer Camp, "Spatial Data Science: Innovations in Remote Sensing and GIS," is a four-week program consisting of four modules that cover Geospatial Analysis, Radar and Optical Remote Sensing, Google Earth Engine for Geospatial Big Data, and Climate Data Mapping. Participants will receive certificates upon successful completion of the training workshop. The opening ceremony set a positive tone for the Summer Camp 2024, promising an enriching experience for all participants. As the workshop unfolds, attendees can anticipate gaining insights into spatial data science and its real-world applications.
