A reaction is feasible when the Gibbs free energy change, delta G, is negative. Delta G equals delta H minus T times delta S, so both the enthalpy change and the entropy change decide the outcome. When examiners mark CAIE papers (mostly via on-screen marking software like RM Assessor), they use standardized digital stamps and notations.
Core Marking Stamps & Symbols
* Tick (\checkmark): A valid marking point or correct response that satisfies the mark scheme. In many subjects, 1 tick = 1 mark awarded.
* Cross (\times): Incorrect answer, misconception, or a required marking point was missed.
* SEEN: The examiner has viewed and read the page or section. Examiners are required to stamp this on blank answer pages, crossed-out work, or continued pages to verify nothing was overlooked. It awards zero marks.
* BOD (Benefit of Doubt): The wording is slightly ambiguous or borderline, but the examiner gave you credit.
* NBOD (No Benefit of Doubt): The response is too ambiguous or incomplete to justify awarding the mark.
Accuracy & Method Codes (Sciences & Math)
* M / A / B Marks:
* M: Method mark (correct working, even if calculation fails).
* A: Accuracy mark (correct value derived from correct method).
* B: Independent mark (standalone fact or correct value without working).
* ECF / FT: Error Carried Forward / Follow-Through—you made an earlier mistake, but your subsequent method was fully correct based on that wrong value.
* SF / AE / EE: Significant Figure, Arithmetic Error, or Ex*****on Error penalties.
* Omission / Caret (\wedge): A crucial step, keyword, or unit was left out.

* TV (Too Vague): The statement lacks precision or depth to trigger the mark scheme point.

Your marked CAIE script is free. The remark is not.

Access to Scripts (ATS) costs nothing from Cambridge - your exams officer can download your marked digital scripts from the My Cambridge portal. Some schools add a small local admin fee for staff time, and private candidates registered through the British Council should check their SRS portal for handling charges.

An Enquiry About Results is the part that costs money. Clerical recheck and full remark fees differ by component and are published to schools. The good news: if the remark upgrades your final syllabus grade, Cambridge refunds the fee.

So do it in this order. Get the free script first. Sit with your teacher and find out whether marks were actually lost to a marking error or to your answer. Only then pay for the recheck.

What exactly is first ionisation energy? It's the energy needed to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of gaseous atoms to form one mole of gaseous plus 1 ions. The atom must be isolated and in the gas phase, and examiners want that exact wording plus the state symbols. Nail the definition and you bank easy marks every time.
