Education For All
Global Statistics
Prevalence:
Approximately 15% of the world’s population lives with some form of disability, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). This includes a range of conditions that may require special education.
Education Access:
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) estimates that about 1 in 5 children with disabilities are out of school globally.
Inclusive Education:
Countries are increasingly moving toward inclusive education models. In many high-income countries, over 80% of children with disabilities attend regular schools.
Pakistan Statistics
Prevalence of Disabilities: The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics estimates that about 2.5% of the population has some form of disability, which translates to millions of individuals, including children.
School Enrollment:
According to reports, only about 40% of children with disabilities in Pakistan have access to education, with significant barriers remaining.
Special Education Facilities:
There are around 1,500 special education institutions in Pakistan, but these often face challenges such as insufficient funding, lack of trained teachers, and inadequate resources.
Challenges Faced
Cultural Stigma:
There’s often societal stigma surrounding disabilities, which can hinder educational access.
Infrastructure:
Many schools lack the necessary facilities and trained staff to support children with special needs.
Policy Implementation: While there are laws and policies aimed at improving access to education for children with disabilities, implementation remains inconsistent.
