🎓 Orientation Session for First-Semester Students Fall-2026

On 14 September 2026, the Department organized an interactive orientation session for the first-semester students of the BS Anthropology program. The session was designed to warmly welcome the new students and help them become familiar with the department, faculty, academic environment, and the discipline of Anthropology.

The session was graced by Chairperson Dr. Saadia Abid, along with the faculty members of the department, who warmly welcomed the newly enrolled students. The activity was hosted by Ms. Maryam Riasat and Ms. Sania Zahra.

As part of the interactive session, faculty members were invited to share their academic journeys, experiences of studying Anthropology, and exposure to academic institutions both within Pakistan and abroad. They also introduced students to the discipline, highlighted various academic and professional opportunities in Anthropology, and provided an overview of the department's academic programs and activities.

The students actively participated in the discussion, interacted with the faculty members, and had the opportunity to ask questions and seek guidance about their academic journey.
The event concluded with a campus walk led by senior students, who introduced the newcomers to important facilities and locations across the campus.

The session provided a welcoming and engaging platform for the new students to connect with their teachers and seniors, fostering a sense of belonging and community within the department.

On 25 August 2026, Ms. Attieya Iqbal, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Anthropology at Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, successfully defended her doctoral thesis titled:
Ethno-cultural Continuity through Language: Analyzing Changes in Punjabi Culture due to Language Shift

The research was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Waheed Iqbal Chaudhry, and the external examiners were Prof. Dr. Jamil Ahmad and Dr. Ayesha Sheraz.

The study explores the vital relationship between language, culture, identity, and collective memory, examining how language shift is reshaping Punjabi cultural continuity among Majhi-speaking communities in Pakistan and the global Punjabi diaspora. Using a qualitative, multi-sited ethnographic approach, including in-depth interviews, sociolinguistic surveys, and discourse analysis, the research draws upon communities in Sialkot, Sheikhupura, and Gujranwala, as well as Punjabi diaspora communities in Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Canada.

The findings highlight how urbanization, migration, formal education, media exposure, and family language practices are contributing to a gradual shift from Punjabi toward dominant languages such as Urdu, English, and Portuguese. The study further examines the implications of this shift for intergenerational cultural transmission, identity negotiation, and perceptions of cultural authenticity. At the same time, the research demonstrates the resilience of Punjabi communities, particularly through code-switching, selective language teaching, cultural rituals, and other adaptive practices that enable Punjabi to remain an important symbolic resource for ethnic identity and cultural belonging. Drawing on ethnolinguistic vitality, cultural transmission, and postcolonial perspectives on language and power, the thesis offers a comprehensive framework for understanding contemporary language-shift dynamics. It also emphasizes the importance of Punjabi in educational curricula, regional digital media, family-level language preservation, and institutional and state support.

Dr. Saadia Abid, Chairperson, congratulated Dr. Attieya Iqbal on the successful defense of her doctoral research and thanked the faculty members, students, and all participants who attended the online viva for their valuable participation and support.

🌿 Plantation Drive at the Department of Anthropology

On 3rd September 2026, the Department of Anthropology organized a plantation activity in the front lawns of the Department. The Chairperson, Dr Saadia Abid, along with faculty members, officers, and staff, planted ornamental plants to enhance the beauty and greenery of the department.

The plantation activity was joined by Dr Inam Leghari, Dr Aneela Sultana, Dr Baha ul Haq, Fieldwork Supervisor Dr Sajjad Haider, and Technical Assistant Dr Tabassum Rehmani.

Staff members Mr Abdul Basit, Mr Shahzada Aftab Khan, Mr Sajjad Ahmad, Librarian, and Mr Aftab Ahmed also actively participated by planting trees and ornamental plants.

Special appreciation is extended to our dedicated gardeners, Mr Muhammad Talib and Mr Muhammad Saddiaque, who have been caring for and maintaining the Department's lawns for many years. Their continued efforts and services have played an important role in preserving the beauty and greenery of our surroundings.

This plantation drive carries an important message: “Own a Plant.”

As part of our civic and environmental responsibility, each one of us should plant trees and, equally importantly, take responsibility for their care and growth. Through such small but meaningful actions, we can contribute to beautifying the world around us and play our part in addressing the challenges of climate change and global warming.

On 14th May 2026, Rabia Jawed, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Anthropology at Quaid-I-Azam University Islamabad, successfully defended her thesis titled “Navigating New Frontiers through an Anthropological Analysis of New Reproductive Technologies and Reproductive Health in Pakistan’’. Her research was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Anwaar Mohy-ud-Din. The external examiners were Dr. Anwar Iqbal Shaheen and Dr. Aysha Sheraz.
The research examined the socio-cultural dimensions of reproductive health, new reproductive technologies (NRTs), and women’s reproductive rights in Pakistan through an anthropological lens. Conducted over one year at the Mother & Child Health Centre of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad, the study employed a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design involving a survey of 383 respondents alongside participant observation, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and case studies. The findings revealed that reproductive health in Pakistan is deeply shaped by cultural norms, gender expectations, social stigma, limited awareness, patriarchal structures, and unequal access to healthcare services and reproductive technologies. The research further highlighted barriers such as illiteracy, financial constraints, religious and socio-cultural perceptions, and restricted decision-making power for women regarding reproductive choices. The study concluded that ensuring equitable, informed, and culturally sensitive reproductive healthcare, including access to modern reproductive technologies, is essential not only for public health but also for advancing social justice, women’s empowerment, and human rights in Pakistan.

Chairperson Dr. Saadia Abid congratulated Dr. Rabia Jawad on this academic achievement and thanked the faculty members, students, and audience for their presence and engagement.
