Beware of How You Address Someone

Words leave marks that the tongue quickly forgets, but hearts often carry for years.

Sometimes we speak harshly because we think the other person is beneath us, too young to answer back, too gentle to respond, too loving to leave, or too powerless to defend themselves. We mistake their silence for weakness and their patience for permission.

But never forget: every believer has Allah by their side.

The One you speak down to may have no desire to argue with you, but they can raise their hands in dua. And the One who hears the whisper of a broken heart is unimaginably greater than the one who caused it. No position, wealth, influence, or status can protect a person from the consequences of Allah’s justice.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)

Choose your words carefully. Speak with respect, especially to those who cannot repay your kindness or resist your harshness. True strength is not in overpowering people with your tongue—it is in controlling it for the sake of Allah.

Before you address someone, remember: you are not just speaking to a person; you are speaking in the sight of the Lord who hears every word and knows every intention.

When Life Humbles You

Have you ever wondered why Allah سبحانه وتعالى repeatedly encourages us to seek forgiveness (istighfar)? Why is it so often the key to relief after hardship?

Because hardship has a way of humbling us. It strips away our illusion of control and reminds us of our dependence on Allah. In those moments, arrogance begins to melt, and the heart becomes ready to return to its Creator.

Istighfar is more than asking for forgiveness—it is an act of surrender. It breaks the false god of the ego within us and brings us back to our True Master. And when we submit to Him, everything begins to fall into its proper place.

Allah says:

“And whoever fears Allah—He will make for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect.” (Qur’an 65:2–3)

And Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) said to his people:

“Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is Ever-Forgiving. He will send rain upon you in abundance, increase you in wealth and children, and provide for you gardens and rivers.” (Qur’an 71:10–12)

Sometimes, the door out of hardship doesn’t open when our circumstances change—it opens when our hearts do.
