HLP Graduate Yuko Yoneda is currently based in Liberia and is working on the huge response to the breakout of Ebola in West Africa.
She has experience working for a number of organisations including Oxfam, Action Aid and Save the Children and has worked in a range of countries affected by a disaster and/or conflict, including Pakistan, Cambodia, Myanmar and Somalia.
Yuko attended the Humanitarian Leadership Programme in 2013-2014 and believes it has helped her deal with the current crisis. This is her story:
“I decided to go on the HLP because I wanted more experience in emergency response. I’ve seen a lot of poor challenges and contradictions in response work and I wanted to learn how to do things differently. I also wanted to develop the skills to lead in a challenging environment.
For me, the HLP sharpened my self-awareness. I found new things out about myself that I never knew before.
Simulation exercises pushed me out of my comfort zone. I had to think and act at the same time – it was very challenging.
The simulation exercises left a strong impression on me. In one simulation, I was put in charge of security and logistics – I had to make high pressure decisions on the spot. I still think about it now and how I could have chosen other options and what factors were important at the time.
The reason the simulations work so well is that they go hand-in-hand with coaching, mentoring and feedback from other participants. All of this together is very powerful.
I learned the importance of ‘being on the dance floor, while also maintaining a balcony view’. You need to be in touch with the reality of a situation, but you also need to see the bigger picture. I am trying to use this lesson in my current work on the Ebola response in Liberia. Among the myriad of issues and demands, I constantly ask myself what the priorities are, and if my efforts are focused around those priorities.
The first week of the Ebola response was chaos – similar to the simulation exercise we did during the HLP – I’m glad I was mentally prepared.
I try and take myself back to what I learned. Some of the most important things were about how to guide a team – I try to maintain clarity about each one’s role in the response, and help them to identify their priorities. As a result of what I learned I now try to divide my attention better across my team.
The balance of theory and practice in HLP were just right. The conceptual sessions set the structure through which we can look at humanitarian responses and the leadership required for it. It also gave me a useful frame of reference to reflect on my practice.
I’d definitely recommend the HLP to others – it has shaped my perspective on humanitarian response.”

Children’s universities to help shape the way we teach | Horizon Magazine - European Commission
On some streets in Europe, eight out of 10 children go to university, while in others it’s fewer than eight in 100. That’s according to an EU project which aims to reverse this trend by encouraging institutions to set up children’s universities and get young people to help change the way science is taught.
