The National Center of GIS and Space Applications (NCGSA), Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad, Pakistan was represented at the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) Workshop on the International Space Weather Initiative (ISWI 2026), held in Seoul, Republic of Korea from 7โ€“11 September 2026 under the theme "AI-Enabled Space Weather for Global Cooperation and Capacity Building."

Mr. Usama Ahmed, Co-PI of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems - IST - NCGSA & Space Education and Outreach - NCGSA Research Lab (GSERL), presented Pakistan's work in the domain of GNSS & Space Weather, on monitoring the ionosphere using a low-cost multi-constellation ICTP GNSS station in Islamabad. He also had an honor to serve as a rapporteur for Session 6.

The study uses 15 months of GPS, Galileo and BeiDou observations, including the geomagnetic storms of November 2025 and January 2026. It shows how affordable receivers can strengthen national space weather monitoring.

Our sincere thanks to United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), the Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) and the ISWI Secretariat for hosting, and to special akcnowledgment to ICTP: International Centre for Theoretical Physics for its low-cost GNSS network parrtnership.

As part of the National Center of GIS and Space Applications at Institute of Space Technology, Summer Internship Program 2026, the GNSS Research Lab hosted 19 interns representing 9 universities and institutions across Pakistan, working in 9 supervised project teams.

Over the two-month program, the interns gained practical exposure to Global Navigation Satellite Systems, Positioning, Navigation & Timing (PNT), receiver technologies, GNSS data analysis, simulation, and emerging navigation applications. Their work focused on translating theoretical concepts into practical research and technology-oriented outcomes.

Key projects included the NCGSA GNSS Observatory, GNSS Simulation Lab, GNSS Human Tracker, Indoor Positioning System, GNSS & Aviation Management, Space Weather Observatory, and web-based GNSS visualization and analysis tools.

Through hands-on research, technical development, and close mentorship, the program provided young researchers with an opportunity to strengthen their technical skills while exploring real-world applications of satellite navigation.

We congratulate all our interns on successfully completing the program and wish them continued success as they contribute to the future of GNSS, PNT, and space technologies in Pakistan.

GPS Lost ! Vision Takes Over

What happens to a UAV's navigation when GNSS is jammed and the vehicle is moving too fast for standard visual methods to keep up?

GNSS sensors are vulnerable to signal jamming and to the changing positions of satellites. Systems relying solely on an inertial measurement unit (IMU) accumulate positioning error that can reach the kilometer scale. Standard SLAM methods don't apply either: because the UAV moves at high speed along all three axes, the background continuously changes.

Ali Gรผven and ฤฐmam ลžamil Yetik (TOBB Economics and Technology University, Ankara) present a camera-only navigation solution for continuously operating high-speed UAVs โ€” the paper frames the problem as optimal route navigation for UAVs such as missiles or drones.

SuperPoint extracts features and LightGlue matches UAV camera images to reference satellite images. Two methods are introduced here: reference image optimization (RIO), which autonomously selects the reference images, and feature anomaly detection (FAD), which eliminates matched features inconsistent with camera movement. Between matching cycles, an XGBoost model tracks points using translation and rotation changes derived from homography estimation.

In the authors' words: "The results in Table 3 indicate that the proposed method does not exhibit the best tracking performance based on pixel error, but is very close to the best-performing method with a considerably lower computation time."

Evaluated entirely in simulation โ€” Unreal Engine environments streamed via AirSim, plus Google Earth imagery โ€” with runtimes measured on an Nvidia Jetson AGX Xavier. Reported target-based navigation error: 14.82 ยฑ 2.42 m.
