Why Should Muslims Learn Tajweed While Reciting the Qur’an?

Learning Tajweed is essential for every Muslim because it ensures that the Qur’an is recited correctly, beautifully, and as it was revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Firstly, Tajweed helps preserve the original meaning of the Qur’an. A slight mistake in pronunciation can change the meaning of a word entirely. By learning Tajweed, Muslims protect the words of Allah from alteration and fulfill their responsibility of accurate recitation.
Secondly, Tajweed is part of respect and reverence for the Qur’an. Allah says in the Qur’an:
“And recite the Qur’an with measured recitation.” (Surah Al-Muzzammil 73:4)
This command emphasizes reciting with care, clarity, and proper rules—exactly what Tajweed teaches.
Thirdly, reciting with Tajweed enhances spiritual connection and concentration (khushu‘). When recitation flows correctly with proper stops, elongations, and articulation, the heart feels more connected to the message of Allah.
Moreover, learning Tajweed follows the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, who learned the Qur’an directly from Angel Jibreel (AS) with precise pronunciation. By practicing Tajweed, Muslims follow this noble tradition.
