I’ve had many experiences where I was unsure whether to laugh or cry. At one school, while teaching phonics, the word "lag" came up. When I asked for its meaning, 90% of the students pointed to their legs. These were Grade 2 students in a proper school with trained teachers following a well-known phonics program.

Another incident I recall was when the word "fat" came up. Most students said its meaning was, "Miss, woh jo kushti hoti hai" (referring to wrestlers). These were Grade 5 students, who are expected to read and understand words like "photosynthesis."

These experiences reveal the reality of what is happening in classrooms. I truly hope and pray that policymakers—who are undoubtedly working hard to improve the education system—are able to recognize these gaps and address them effectively.

A lot is being done and spent to improve the education system. What I don't understand is how digitizing the same curriculum—which has already failed—can lead to better outcomes or enhance learning. Additionally, what about the issues with electricity and WiFi? How are we going to address those challenges after spending millions on digitization? To me, it seems like buying expensive groceries without having a recipe.

At English Urdu Mai, we are successfully addressing the issue of "Why are children not learning?" The main cause is that children are not learning to read effectively. Only with accurate reading follows learning.

To tackle this, we have developed a unique technique that provides a strong language foundation for Urdu-speaking English language learners. We conducted successful pilot programs at SOS, and we are grateful to SOS for their openness to new learning approaches, which allowed us to implement and demonstrate the effectiveness of our program.

I wish I could do more, teach more, and motivate more. I wish I could continue to make them believe in their intelligence. Such beautiful, loving, and sweet children. Each one of them made me feel they were mine; I was so touched. They deserve so much better and so much more. We covered an entire year's content in just 4 weeks. Their learning is amazing from struggling to read 3 letter words most of them achieved reading 2 syllable words, it felt magic, feel so grateful.
