SSTRL is part of the National Center of GIS and Space Applications.

Founded in 2009 as ICUBE lab by the EE department of IST and later on upgraded to Space Systems Lab, SSTRL is a mega project of the IST's ICUBE team. ICUBE is the premier student satellite development program of any institution in Pakistan initiated by Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad. 1st satellite of this program, ICUBE-1 was launched in Nov 2013.

SSTRL,NCGSA had the pleasure of collaborating with the Department of Electrical Engineering at COMSATS University Abbottabad for a workshop titled "CubeSat Technology: Design, Development, and Future Prospects" held on May 14, 2025.

The event brought together students from Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Computer Science, offering a unique blend of theoretical insight and hands-on prototype demonstrations—empowering the next generation of space technologists.

We extend our sincere thanks to Prof. Dr. Shahid Khattak (Director, CUI Abbottabad) for highlighting the critical role of academia-industry partnerships, and to Dr. Irfanullah (Head, Dept. of Electrical Engineering) for his invaluable support in advancing space education.

📡 Workshop on CubeSat Technology at Air University Kamra 🚀
The SSTRL team, with the guidance of Dr. Rehan, had the privilege of conducting a workshop in collaboration with the Mechanical and Electrical Departments of Air University Kamra Campus, focusing on CubeSat Technology and its real-world applications.

Special thanks to Dr. Zabd ur Rehman, HoD Mechanical Department, and Dr. Husan Ali, HoD Electrical Department, for their incredible support and hospitality throughout the session.

Students participated enthusiastically and gained hands-on experience in:
🔹 Designing satellite trajectories in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) using professional tools
🔹 Basics of satellite communication
🔹 Live demonstration of KidSat – an educational satellite initiative

The session was highly interactive and engaging, with lots of questions, ideas, and energy from the students.
Looking forward to more such collaborative learning opportunities in the future! 🚀

A pioneering CubeSat workshop at GIKI sparked enthusiasm and curiosity among participants, who acquired hands-on experience with CubeSat technology, LEO trajectory design using STK, and satellite communication systems. Sincere appreciation is extended to the GIKI Electrical Engineering Department for their unwavering support and warm hospitality, which contributed significantly to the event's resounding success .

The launch event will be telecast live in IST auditorium as well as IST website and IST social media platforms.

Pakistan's historic moon mission "ICUBE-QAMAR" (ICUBE-Q) will be launched on Friday 3rd May at 1250 PST onboard China's Chang'E6 from Hainan, China.

The satellite ICUBE-Q has been designed and developed by IST in collaboration with China's Shanghai University SJTU and Pakistan's national space agency SUPARCO.

The launch activity of the lunar mission will be telecast live in IST auditorium, on IST website as well as IST social media platforms.

Institute of Space Technology has succesfully designed and developed cubeSat ICUBE-Q [IST CubeSat - Qamar] in collaboration with SJTU China. The satellite has qualified all flight tests and is now succesfully integrated with Change'E6 mission of China. ICUBE-Q will fly with Chang'E6 as a piggyback and will be deployed in Lunar orbit in May 2024.

SSTRL organized first ever CubeSat Developers Summer School where College and Undergraduate students from different parts of Pakistan participated to explore the world of CubeSats.

Numerous activities were planned that encompassed not only theoretical aspects of CubeSat development but also practical demonstrations. Some of the highlighted activities include
1. Satellite Orbits Design
2. Structural Modelling
3. Antenna Deployment of CubeSat
4. Image Acquisition in Real Time
5. Communicating with Satellites
6. Air Bearing Demonstration
7. Assembling and Integrating own CubeSats

Students learned a great deal from this interactive camp and we are determined to train more and more students regarding CubeSat Technology.
