Ash-Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih Al-'Uthaymeen answers a question about prostrating (sujood) in Salaah
Question: May Allah bless you. The listener, Ahmad Sa'eed Ali from Yemen says in his question: What is the ruling of someone who prays with something from his clothing on his forehead - whether it is a turban, or a ghutrah (man's scarf), or anything similar to that from the garments. The point is if these garments cover the place of prostration is the prayer correct in this situation? I hope for some benefit, may Allah reward you.
Answer: Yes, it is confirmed in the two Saheeh books (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim) from a hadeeth of Ibn 'Abbaas (radhiyallahu 'anhu) that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "I was commanded to prostrate upon seven bones." In another wording of the narration in Al-Bukhaaree's collection it states, "We were commanded to prostrate on seven bones: on the forehead - and he pointed with his hand to his nose - and the two palms of the hands, and the two knees, and the extremeties of the two feet."
Prostrating on these seven bones is a pillar of the prayer, without which the prayer is not correct. However, it is well known that from these seven bones there are parts which are covered under all circumstances, like the two knees for example. Verily the person who is praying Salaah will have his knees covered and very rarely will anyone pray with their knees uncovered. In reference to the hands and the face usually the one who is praying touches the ground with them at the place where he prostrates. In reference to the two feet, sometimes they're covered and sometimes they're not covered. Sometimes the person will pray while wearing cloth socks, or while wearing leather socks, or while wearing his sandals (or shoes). In this case the extremeties of his feet will not be directly touching the ground that he's praying upon. Also, sometimes the person may pray barefooted, in which case the extremeties of his feet will directly touch the ground he's praying on. So what remains is the face. As it is known, the face - especially as it relates to men - is always or usually uncovered, and the person praying will make his forehead touch the ground he is praying on directly. However, if there is a need to place a barrier between one's forehead and the ground he is praying on, there is no harm in that.
Anas bin Maalik (radhiyallahu 'anhu) said, "We used to pray with the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) during times of intense heat, and if one of us was not able to keep his head on the ground, he would spread out his garment and prostrate upon it."
Therefore, if there is some hardship upon the one praying in placing his forehead upon the ground directly, either due to something on the ground, or something on his forehead, then there is no harm in him spreading out some part of his garment to prostrate upon it, or some part of his ghutrah, or some part of his turban to prostrate upon it. However, if he prostrates on some part of his turban (that's covering his forehead) he must be careful to make sure that his nose touches the ground, because it's possible that his nose may be somewhat lifted from the ground if something is placed between his forehead and the ground he is prostrating upon. Thus, he must be careful of the nose and make sure that it also touches the ground that he is prostrating upon.
