The Virtual University is Pakistan's first public sector university based completely on modern Information and Communication Technologies. The University opened its virtual doors in 2002 using television broadcasts and the Internet thereby allowing students to follow its programs regardless of their physical location. At VU, the top professors of the country, regardless of their institutional affiliations, develop and deliver hand-crafted courses. The University holds a Federal Charter, making its degrees recognized and accepted all over the country as well as overseas. Pakistani students residing overseas in several other countries have also enrolled in the University’s programs. The University relies on digital media, Internet and free-to-air satellite television broadcasts to impart education. The University has its own four television channels (VTV1, VTV2, VTV3 & VTV4) and students have the liberty to watch their lectures in the comfortable surroundings of their homes which become virtual classrooms of VU or at any of the many VU campuses spread all over the country. These lectures are also available in DVD format and can easily be purchased at a minimal cost from University’s on-line Bookshop (http://bookshop.vu.edu.pk). The lecture videos are also available on the globally popular YouTube site http://www.youtube.com/vu. Over 6000 video lectures on YouTube make it one of the largest contributions by any university to the Open Education Resources (OER) movement. VU has now published all courses on its open courseware site (http://ocw.vu.edu.pk), and thereby joined the ranks with top universities of the world. VU’s open courseware website has been ranked as the best new open courseware website for the year 2012 by the international OCW Consortium. The students and teachers use the Internet to interact with each other. For this purpose the Virtual University has developed an online Learning Management System (LMS) through which the students have 24/7 access to reading material, lecture videos and notes and prescribed texts. The LMS is also used to hand out assignments to students and hold pop quizzes and practice tests. This innovative and unique mechanism for the delivery of education adopted by VU offers a high degree of flexibility to students who may view the lectures at a time of their choice.

Virtual University of Pakistan Strengthens International Academic Collaboration at IDEC 2026

The Virtual University of Pakistan (VU) participated as a co-organizer in the 2nd International Digital Education Conference (IDEC) 2026, held on September 24, 2026, at INTI International University, Malaysia, in hybrid mode. The collaboration between VU and INTI International University was established to support the conference and promote cooperative academic and research activities between the two institutions.

VU demonstrated a strong academic presence at the international forum with a total of 14 research presentations by the Department of English and the Department of Education, highlighting the University's active engagement in research and scholarly exchange at the international level.

In addition to research presentations, VU faculty members performed key academic and organizational roles during the conference. Dr. Qurrat-ul-Ain, Head of the Department of English, and Dr. Aisha Mahmood, Head of the Department of Education, participated as Track Keynote Speakers. Dr. Muhammad Wasif from the Department of English served as the Focal Person and Session Chair, while Dr. Sumbal Asghar from the Department of Education also served as a Session Chair. Ms. Rabea Tahir Abbas from the Department of English and Dr. Hina Amin from the Department of Education contributed as Session Moderators.

The conference focused on “Innovative AI and Emerging Technologies for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in Digital Education,” providing an international platform for academics, researchers, and education professionals to exchange research findings, innovative practices, and perspectives on the evolving role of technology in education.

VU's participation as a co-organizer, together with its 14 research presentations and faculty representation in keynote, session chairing, and moderation roles, reflects the University's continued commitment to strengthening international academic linkages, promoting research culture, and contributing to global scholarly discourse in digital education and emerging technologies.

The collaboration further enhances opportunities for academic networking, research cooperation, and knowledge exchange between Virtual University of Pakistan and international higher education institutions.

The Information Technology Club (ITC) and the Department of CS & IT hosted the first session of Learn, Connect, and Grow (LCG) 2026! Faculty and students gathered to discuss emerging tech trends, active projects, and student-led initiatives:

• Muhammad Hamza Ali (BSCS) on Integrating Security-First Mindsets into Responsive Frontend Web Development
• Sidra Eman (BSCS) on Exploring Generative AI: Everyday Creativity and Learning
• Abdullah Khetran (BBIT) on Becoming a Stanford Section Leader

Dr Israr Ullah (HOD-CS&IT) thanked the presenters and participants for their efforts in discussing the ways to improve the students' learning, networking, and becoming future leaders in the domain. He also reiterated the need to launch further sessions with the purpose of enhancing the students’ communication, presentation, and leadership skills in their respective domains.
