What is Sufism? Love and affection. It is the cure for hatred and vengeance. The heart attaining tranquility–
which is the root of religion. Concentrating your mind,
which is the religion of Ahmad (pbuh). Contemplation that travels to the Divine throne. It is a far-seeing gaze. Sufism is keeping one’s distance from imagination and supposition. Sufism is found in certainty. Surrendering one’s soul to the care of the inviolability of religion;
this is Sufism. Sufism is the path of faith and affirmation of unity;
this is the incorruptible religion. Sufism is the smooth and illuminated path. It is the way to the most exalted paradise. I have heard that the ecstasy of the wearers of wool
comes from finding the taste of religion.

Day 2 — From Kun to Al-Kawn

“Be” → Being / Creation

In the first section, we reflected on Kun — the Divine Command of Allah.

Now we move from Kun to Al-Kawn — creation, existence, the universe that we see around us.

In the language of Tasawwuf, the whole creation is an āyah — a sign pointing towards its Creator.

The heavens, the earth, the stars, nature, life and even our own existence do not stand by themselves. Everything depends upon Allah and exists through His Will and Command.

The seeker therefore does not look at creation only with the eyes.

He learns to look with the heart.

He sees the beauty of creation and remembers Al-Jamīl — The Beautiful.

He sees mercy and remembers Ar-Raḥmān — The Most Merciful.

He sees order and wisdom and remembers Al-Ḥakīm — The All-Wise.

Thus the journey of the seeker moves:

from creation to contemplation,
from contemplation to remembrance,
and from remembrance towards Ma‘rifah.

The world is not the destination.

The world is a sign pointing towards the One who created it.

🌿 Reflection

Look at creation with awareness.

Do not stop at what the eye can see.

Ask the heart:

“What is this sign teaching me about its Creator?”

This is the beginning of fikr — spiritual contemplation.

Kun → Creation → Contemplation → Zikr → Ma‘rifah

THE COMMAND THAT OPENED EXISTENCE کُن

There was a silence before all silences.

No sky, no earth, no time, no name. No mouth to speak and no ear to hear. Only Allah ﷻ, alone in His جلال, needing nothing, missing nothing.

Then the veil moved, and a single word was spoken

And existence, which had never known itself, opened its eyes.

O friend, look at what one word did. From کاف and نون came the عرش and the کرسی, the seven heavens, the angels standing in rows, the seas, the mountains, the morning wind, and the beating of your own heart. Two letters, and between them every world that ever was.

He did not labour. He did not wait. He did not take help from anyone.

"When He decrees a matter, He only says to it: Be — and it is."
"إِنَّمَا أَمْرُهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ شَيْئًا أَن يَقُولَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ" (یٰسٓ ۳۶:۸۲)

Now hear the secret, O

That word was not spoken once, long ago, and then finished. It is spoken over every moment. Every breath you take is a fresh کُن. You are not standing on your own strength. You are being held in existence, right now, by a word.

And if one word from Him can raise a universe out of nothing, what can it not do with a heart that turns to Him? The dead earth hears کُن and becomes a garden. The dry eye hears کُن and weeps. The hard heart hears کُن and softens.

You were not begged into being. You were called.

So sit quietly tonight and ask yourself the question that the عارفین never stop asking: He said "کُن" and I became. But have I yet become what He called me for?

Section 2 follows, where کُن becomes الکَون, and the One appears as the many.

SHAYKH AL-AKBAR — MUHYIDDIN IBN ʿARABI (رحمۃ اللہ علیہ)
560–638 AH / 1165–1240 CE

Some people are sent by Allah ﷻ to light up a whole age. He was one of them.

The people of the path call him شیخِ اکبر — The Greatest Master. They also call him محی الدین — the one who gave new life to the Deen.

He was born in Murcia in اندلس (Muslim Spain) and grew up in Seville. From a young age, Allah ﷻ opened upon him کشف (unveiling) and ذوق (the taste of the heart). He travelled to Morocco, Egypt, Makkah, Baghdad, Konya and Damascus. He sat with the اولیاء اللہ, served the مشائخ, and lived in ذکر.

The chart below explains his book شجرۃ الکون — The Tree of Being — section by section. In it, the whole universe is one tree:

The seed is the command "کُن" — Be! 🌱
The root is the حقیقتِ محمدیہ ﷺ
The branches are the افلاک and the worlds
The fruit is the human being, going back to his Rabb in عشق and معرفت 🍃

You are not outside this Tree. You are its branch, its leaf, its fruit — and a reflection of its Root.

📖 Save it. Read it slowly. Read it with the قلب, not only with the eyes. What the mind cannot hold, the heart can receive.
