2.4.7 Solubility
Solubility is the maximum amount of a solute that can dissolve in a specific solvent at a given temperature and pressure to form a saturated solution.

2.4.8 Effect of temperature and pressure on solubility
Temperature and pressure affect the solubility of solids and gases in liquids differently. The solubility of solids in liquids typically increases with increasing temperature, whereas the solubility of gases in liquids generally decreases. Pressure does not have a significant effect on the solubility of solids, but it does increase the solubility of gases in liquids.

Pure Substances (Element & compound)
A pure substance is a material that contains only one kind of element or compound and has a fixed composition throughout.
 Every portion of a pure substance has the same properties and composition.
 It has a definite melting point and boiling point.
 Its composition cannot be separated by physical methods (like filtration or distillation).

• Elements: Are pure substances made of only one type of atom. They cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
Example: oxygen (O) , Carbon (C), Iron (Fe).

• Compounds: A pure substance that contains two or more elements chemically combined together in a fixed ratio.
A compound can be decomposed by chemical processes such as thermal decomposition and electrolysis.
Example: Water (H2O), Carbon dioxide (CO2), Sodium Chloride (NaCl).

Impure Substances (Mixtures)
An impure substance is made up of two or more different elements or compounds that are physically combined in any proportion.

 Its components retain their individual properties.
 The mixture’s composition can vary.
 It does not have a fixed melting or boiling point.
 The components can be separated by physical methods such as filtration, evaporation, distillation, or chromatography.
Examples:
• Air (a mixture of gases)
• Sea water (water + salts)
