BDV Test of Transformer Oil.

The Breakdown Voltage (BDV) test checks the electrical insulation strength (dielectric strength) of transformer oil. Transformer oil acts as both an insulator and a cooling medium

Why is BDV Test performed?

Transformer oil can absorb moisture, dust, carbon particles, and other contaminants during operation. These reduce its insulation strength.

BDV testing helps determine whether the oil is suitable for continued operation.

How the BDV Test Works ?

1. A clean test cup is filled with a transformer-oil sample.

2. Two electrodes are placed inside the oil with a specified gap.

3. High AC voltage is gradually increased.
Initially, the oil provides insulation between the electrodes.

4. At a certain voltage, an electrical spark/arc jumps between the electrodes.

5. The voltage at which this occurs is called the Breakdown Voltage (BDV).

The test is normally repeated several times & the readings are evaluated according to the applicable test standard.
