"Did you know that percussion runs on maths? πŸ₯βœ¨

During the two week She Explores STEAM Camp, schoolgirls from 25 government schools gathered for a series of hands-on workshops including a unique session exploring the maths behind percussion, led by Rameez Ragheb (Lecturer, Integrated Sciences and Mathematics at Habib University).

Students discovered how rhythms link directly to mathematical concepts: breaking beats into fractions (halves, quarters, sixteenths), understanding how Beats Per Minute (BPM) controls tempo, and experimenting with permutations to build their own patterns.

From learning about the to creating original rhythms, the workshop helped students discover a creative side of mathematics they had never experienced before. Hear Rameez reflect on the experience in the video!

This Independence Day we brought a special STEAM activity for our students in partnership with Shan: Engineer Your Favorite Pakistani Monument!

Winners of the STEAM Muqablo Reimagine Your Neighborhood sculpture challenge from across Karachi region were invited to participate in the activity and make a sculpture of Pakistani monuments using recycled Shan Masala boxes, recycled bottles, scissors, tape and glue as their tools.

We were amazed to see the creativity and innovation in their projects as they built these monuments, incorporating concepts like, colour, structural stability, scaling ratios and engineering techniques in their projects!

From lessons and laughter to conversations with friends, teachers and school leaders, they captured their first days back exactly as they experienced them - sharing favourite memories from last year and the summer, how it feels to return, and everything they are looking forward to in the year ahead.

The Mathematics Teachers' Professional Development Programme at LUMS concluded with two enriching days of collaborative learning, mathematical exploration, and innovative teaching practices.

Day 4 featured an engaging sessions by Dr. Shaheen Nazir, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, SBASSE, LUMS. Drawing on resources from the University of Cambridge's NRICH programme, participants explored a range of interactive activities designed to strengthen conceptual understanding and classroom engagement. Working collaboratively in small groups, teachers solved Venn diagram puzzles, explored data handling through Venn diagrams, investigated concepts of randomness and probability through coin-flip exercises, and participated in dice-based games and combinatorics activities focused on even and odd outcomes. The session demonstrated how hands-on, inquiry-based learning can make mathematics more engaging and accessible for students.

On Day 5, Dr. Imran Anwar, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, SBASSE, LUMS, led a thought-provoking sessions on Geometry. Blending geometry with history and storytelling, the session explored the origins of Ο€ (pi) and the Pythagorean Theorem, while highlighting the power of mathematical storytelling as a tool for making abstract concepts more meaningful. Participants also discussed math anxiety and reflected on practical ways to create fun, light-hearted, and engaging classrooms where students feel confident exploring mathematical ideas. Drawing on Plato's Meno and the philosophy behind Math Circles, the session encouraged teachers to foster curiosity, dialogue, and a deeper appreciation of mathematics beyond formulas and procedures.

As the programme comes to a close, we are grateful to all the mathematics teachers from public and private schools across Balochistan for their enthusiasm, active participation, and commitment to strengthening mathematics education. We hope the ideas, strategies, and connections built over these five days will continue to enrich classrooms and inspire students across the province.

8 days, 25 government schools, and endless moments of discovery! The She Explores STEAM Summer Camp - organized at GGSS Khatoon-e-Pakistan - brought together ambitious young girls across Karachi for an unforgettable learning journey. Guided by inspiring young leaders and industry experts, students explored how Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics intersect with everyday life and future careers pathways in STEAM.

From coding in Python, building working hologram projectors, and applying graph theory through local games, to engineering user-centered product packaging and prototyping climate-resilient cities, every day transformed complex concepts into hands-on solutions. Participants enjoyed an exciting blend of learning with fun, exploring new aspects of applied STEAM each day through musical percussion, by mapping local ecosystems and discovering medical research and immunology. Technical learning was seamlessly integrated with essential life skills, including mental well-being, journalism, self-expression, artistic expressions and menstrual health education.

We're halfway through the Mathematics Teacher's Professional Development Program at LUMS, where 35 mathematics teachers from public and private schools across Balochistan have come together for five days of learning, collaboration, and sharing best practices in mathematics education.

Day 1 and 2 began with a session on Number Systems led by Dr. Waqas Ali Azhar, Assistant Professor at SBASSE LUMS, and Dr. Adnan Khan, Associate Professor LUMS. Drawing on resources from the University of Cambridge's NRICH programme, teachers explored a variety of mathematical puzzles, problem-solving techniques, and engaging classroom activities linked to Grades 6–8 topics, including factors, multiples, LCM, and number patterns.

Day 3 session shifted the focus to Effective Teacher Leadership, led by Ms. Tina Hameed, Director of the Teacher & Learning Center at Aitchison College. Participants discussed the characteristics of an effective mathematics teacher and explored practical pedagogical strategies to create engaging learning environments. The session also introduced approaches such as WAGOLL (What A Good One Looks Like), encouraging teachers to use strong examples and reflective teaching practices to enhance student learning.

We're excited to see such a passionate group of educators investing in their professional growth and look forward to the final two days of the workshop.

✨ What a bittersweet moment!
Day 8 marked the grand finale of an incredible, transformative 8-day journey at the She Explores STEAM Camp hosted at GGSS Khatoon-e-Pakistan run by Zindagi Trust. Watching our young campers evolve into confident thinkers, innovative problem solvers, and creative storytellers over the past week has been nothing short of extraordinary. To wrap up this unforgettable adventure, our final day was packed with high-energy workshops led by visionary industry mentors, followed by a deeply moving closing ceremony that celebrated every single participant.

Here is how we spent our final day of STEAM exploration:

πŸ”¬ Medical Research & Immunology
Students engaged in an insightful STEAM Safeer session with Wafa Khan (R&D PDM Assistant Manager at Reckitt) to explore how vaccines work. By learning about the human immune system and how white blood cells combat foreign bacteria, campers gained a deeper appreciation for how the body protects itself. After discussing bacterial behavior and vaccine prevention, students were challenged to design their own hypothetical bacteria - conceptualizing how it would target the body, which organs it would affect, and the symptoms it would cause. Each group presented their concepts through visual illustrations and oral presentations, offering a seamless blend of STEAM disciplines and an exciting glimpse into medical research careers.

πŸ“¦ Product Packaging Design
Noor-ul-Ain (R&D Packaging Technologist at Reckitt) led a dynamic STEAM Safeer session centered on product packaging design. She highlighted the importance of packaging in addressing consumer needs, drawing on real-life case studies from her work at Reckitt. Students were divided into teams, each assigned a unique packaging problem to solve - from creating recognizable brand shapes to solving practical user challenges, such as handling a slippery shampoo bottle in the shower. Working through real-world scenarios sparked vibrant discussions and shed light on crucial, often overlooked aspects of product design, uncovering an exciting, lesser-known STEAM career paths.

🎡 How Music Shapes Film
Students were thrilled to welcome back Jamal Anwar (Lead, Learning for STEAM Policy Unit, Sindh) for a brand-new workshop exploring how music shapes film. The session provided a hands-on look at sound as a powerful storytelling tool. By reviewing various film and drama clips, students experienced firsthand how changing background music dramatically alters the emotional tone of identical visuals - shifting the mood from scary to lighthearted, or mysterious to playful. During an interactive music exercise, campers analyzed a scene from a Pakistani drama and observed in real time how different musical choices altered the feel of the scene, demonstrating that sound does not merely support a visual story - it defines it.

πŸŽ“ Closing Ceremony & Farewell
Following these inspiring workshops, the camp transitioned into a memorable closing ceremony. The event opened with a heartfelt letter exchange, as students, mentors, and facilitators shared written messages of gratitude and encouragement in one another's takeaway envelopes. Everyone then gathered for a cake cutting celebration to mark a happy end to this memorable journey. We are really thankful to ConsumerConnect for gifting the delicious cake for our students and guests to enjoy!

Parents and facilitators enjoyed the final gathering to watch a recap video highlighting the students' eight-day journey and key learnings, followed by a certification ceremony celebrating each participant's accomplishments. The day concluded with photos and fond farewells, locking in the memories and friendships formed throughout the She Explores STEAM Camp!
