Cheer for Conspiracy Theories

Global Perspective by Tufail Abbas

Perspective:
The strength of a democratic society lies not in its ability to silence unsettling questions, but in its capacity to examine them without surrendering its standards of evidence. Conspiracy theories flourish where institutional secrecy, contradictory narratives and unresolved historical questions create a vacuum that official explanations fail to fill. The controversy surrounding pre-9/11 intelligence illustrates this tension: allegations of institutional concealment deserve scrutiny, yet the existence of unanswered questions does not itself establish the truth of an alternative narrative. A mature information society must therefore cultivate scepticism without credulity—holding powerful institutions accountable while demanding evidence strong enough to distinguish legitimate inquiry from conjecture.

'A Question of Region'

Global Perspective by Tufail Abbas

Perspective:
The character of a political order is cultivated not only by institutions but by the historical relationship between state authority and society. Across South and West Asia, similar legacies of colonialism, authoritarianism and weak democratic institutions have produced markedly different patterns of political endurance, suggesting that culture, economic structure and popular resistance matter alongside formal constitutional arrangements. Pakistan occupies an especially revealing position: despite repeated military interventions and persistent pressures towards authoritarian governance, its politically assertive and socially argumentative society has repeatedly constrained the ability of rulers to exercise power indefinitely. Therefore the region’s political divergence cannot be explained by regime type alone; it lies in the varying capacity of societies to contest authority, making state–society relations as important as institutions in determining the durability of political power.

The U.S. plans to open two new military bases in Greenland under an agreement with Denmark and Greenland.

One would revive the Cold War-era Narsarsuaq base in southern Greenland, while the other would be established at Mestersvig on the east coast, currently used by Denmark’s Sirius Dog Sled Patrol.

The agreement is expected to be signed Tuesday in New York and follows months of tension over Trump’s push for greater U.S. control of Greenland.

The U.S. once operated 17 military installations in Greenland; today only Pituffik Space Base remains.

'China is not ready for a Post-American World'

Global Affairs with Global Perspective by Tufail Abbas

Perspective:

The decline of a dominant power does not automatically produce a successor capable of sustaining the order it leaves behind. China’s growing economic weight and expanding strategic reach may position it to benefit from American overextension, but its dependence on an international trading system secured largely by American power exposes a fundamental asymmetry in its rise. The Iran war, in particular, illustrates the limits of Beijing’s present capacity: China can exploit geopolitical opportunities, cushion economic shocks and wield considerable leverage, yet remains reluctant or unable to assume the risks required to shape outcomes beyond its immediate interests. China may therefore be preparing for a post-American order, but it has yet to acquire the diplomatic, military and institutional capacity—or the willingness to bear the costs—of becoming its principal guarantor.

JD Vance on high gas prices:

We’re very cognizant of the fact that, because the Iranians are terrorizing international shipping, energy prices are elevated.

We’re doing everything that we can to try to tamp down on those prices, but give the American people some relief in the interim.

One of the things Trump has talked about is encouraging some of the states to give Americans relief from the gas taxes.
