🌟 Breaking the Myth: Why The Thinking Schools by Pakistan ASCD Say No to Homework 🌟

For generations, homework has been seen as an unquestioned part of schooling. It originated in old, traditional systems where learning was equated with repetition, memorization, and lengthy written tasks at home. The assumption was: more homework = more learning.

But modern research has challenged this belief. Studies by Alfie Kohn (The Homework Myth, 2006) and Harris Cooper (Duke University, 2001) show that excessive or meaningless homework does not improve academic performance and, in fact, can reduce motivation, harm family time, and kill curiosity.

✨ The Thinking Schools Pakistan took this challenge seriously. Under the guidance of the Academic wing; as a trend setter of high quality authentic schooling; a master project implemented at The Thinking School Model Campus PWD, we introduced a No Homework Policy—a first in Pakistan. Instead of loading children with worksheets and revisions, we launched something transformative: The Thinking Journal.

📘 How it works:
Each day, children go home with their Thinking Journal. Instead of rote revision, they engage with three reflective prompts:

1. Today I learned… (what new knowledge or idea they explored)

2. So my questions are… (curiosities, confusions, or deeper inquiries)

3. And I think that… (their personal reflection, interpretation, or opinion)

🧩 Parents are invited into this journey—by simply listening and discussing their child’s thoughts at home. The journal is mandatory to submit every morning, and teachers carefully review the responses. This shuts down blind revisions and closes the doors of sweeping statements on Parent Teacher Meetings without the voice of the learner included. Based on what students ask and think, teachers design reinforcement plans targeting gaps, misunderstandings, and unlearned concepts.

This way, instead of forcing children to repeat what was taught, we focus on deepening understanding, nurturing imagination, and cultivating the joy of thinking.

Parents stay connected with what their child is learning (without piles of worksheets).

Teachers get authentic feedback from every child.

Learners develop higher-order thinking skills, confidence, and ownership of their learning.

On the 28th of February, 2025, Mr. Umair Qureshi, CEO The Thinking Schools Pakistan and Col. (retd) Mr. Ali Hussain, CEO IP Centric Systems signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

Both organizations developed an understanding that to ensure that every child at the school is healthy, The Thinking Schools Pakistan will mount Health Monitoring Kiosks (EZScreening) at their campuses.

Standing firmly with The ASCD Whole Child tenet - Health, every student admitted to TTS will go through the screening process at the time of admission and will be monitored over the term.

With this innovative collaboration, the thinking schools stand out in providing regular reports and updates on children's physical, mental and emotional health.

Both organizations agree to train the teachers to conduct screenings and provide early prompts to the parents whenever there is an indication of conditions ranging from physical issues such as hearing or vision impairment, to behavioral and psychological issues such as ADHD and Dyslexia.

With these reports, the parents will able to take better decisions timely to ensure their child stays safe and healthy.
