What is an essay?
The word essay means to attempt. An essay is an extended piece of writing that presents and supports a thesis or proposition.
The thesis or proposition is the main crack of your essay. The thesis or proposition is the stance you are going to take in an essay.
(Logic starts from a proposition where the proposition asserts that something is the case or it asserts that something is not. A proposition is either true or false. Arguments are built with propositions. The argument is any group of the proposition of which one is claimed to follow from the other, which is regarded as providing support or grounds for the truth of that one.)
Purpose of the essay:
The main purpose of any essay is to discuss, persuade, describe, explain, interpret or analyze a particular topic.
Essays in LAT:
They are mostly descriptive like life in a crowded city, life in a college hostel. The description of these topics includes, describe, discuss and explain.
Also persuasive or argumentative essays, like science: mankind’s friend or enemy. You have to justify it through various citations examples statistics and quotations.
Examiner checks three things in your essay:
RELEVANT:
Those that stick to the main theme of the essay
Irrelevant:
(Those thesis statements that are not related to the theme of the essay, haven’t understood the topic completely.
Incomprehensible:
(Due to vagueness or poor English language)
Do’s while attempting essay:
Brainstorm and realize your time (time management)
Clear and relevant
Strengthen your content
Practice making outlines and writing introductory paragraphs with a clear thesis statement as much as you can before the exam day.
Structure of the Essay:
Introduction ( introductory Paragraph)
A body ( at least 5 paragraph)
A conclusion ( Concluding Paragraph)
Introduction/ introductory paragraph:
A paragraph in itself is an essay. However, an introductory paragraph has two parts:
General statements: in general statement we introduce the general topic to attract the reader interest. Like what are government policies to empower women? General statement^ thesis statement.
Thesis statement: states the specific topic like women empowerment
Thesis statement May list subtopics or sub-division
Thesis statement is normally the last sentence in the introductory paragraph
Mostly move from general to specific statement in the paragraph. If not, then there is no coherency in the paragraph.
The theoretical model be cone shape for explaining these two strategies. GS
TS
Body paragraph:
The body paragraph are used to
Develop your topic ( in a step by step basis)
Prove your points
The body pragraph should have
Some sort of pattern , e.g energy criss, causes=effects(social effects- write separate sub topics)=Recommendations.
A logical division of ideas ( division into sub-topcs and discussion of these sub topcs in separate paragraphs. Social effects separate paragraph must be there for sub topics.
Explanation:
After taking stance on any topic ,a candidate must prove hs/her stance by gving different points for that he/she must develop thess statement. Body paragraph must include
Topic sentence
Supporting sentences
Concluding sentence
The topic sentence must be so clear that the examiner comes to know what the candidate is talking about. What to expect In that PARAGRAPH.
NOTE: TOPIC SEBTENCE is the first sentence of body paragraph it introduces the topic of the essay.
For example:
The very first person I met was Mashal. I first met Mashal standing in a line at a book store. I was having difficulty finding the books for the Law classes. I was taking my first semester here. He not only helped me find my books but he also gave me a good advices on where to get tutorial help in university and where I could find some good books to read. We have become better friends since then and he has been so helpful in answering any question. If I hadn’t met Ahmad that day, I might still be looking for the right books for my classes.
Conclusion:
The conclusion is the final paragraph in any essay. It has three purposes.
It signals the end of the essay. ( wordings should indicate conclusion)
It reminds the reader of your main points. You can do this in two ways
Summarize your sub-topics
Paraphrase your thesis but do not copy your thesis statement.
It leaves the reader with your final thoughts on the topic.
Explanation:
What was your original stance and how have you looked at it and the examiner is very clear about your thoughts process.
The conclusion can also include an opinion, a prediction or a solution to a problem.
Explanation:
You cannot predict something which basically have supporting base in your essay. But you cannot something more which is not written in your essay.
