Proud Moment for IST!

We are delighted to announce that IST students have won the prestigious HBL P@SHA ICT Award in the Student Category! 🏆

Our team, GeoGemma, continues to shine with their innovation, dedication, and excellence.

This journey began as a final year project by two brilliant students from the Department of Space Science, Ahmed Iqbal and Hanzila Bin Yousuf, under the supervision of Dr. Sajid Ghuffar. What started as a vision has now become a globally recognized innovation — first securing Google funding, then achieving milestones like NICAT recognition, the Google Solution Challenge Award in Manila, and now this remarkable HBL P@SHA ICT Award.

👏 Huge congratulations to the team and mentors who made this achievement possible. You’ve made IST proud yet again!

We are proud to share the achievement of Mr. Annus Haider, an alumnus of the Department of Space Science, IST. He has completed his MS in Astronomy and Astrophysics under the supervision of Dr. Abdul Kabir Khan, during which he conducted research on stellar evolution, focusing on Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. This work has led to a research paper that has been accepted into the international journal Modern Physics Letters A.

Annus Haider has now secured a place in the M2 Master’s program in Astrophysics and Data Science leading to a PhD at the University of Strasbourg (Unistra), France. It is ranked among the Top 8 universities in France and is home to its own observatory, making possible his dream of observing deep space and striving to understand the mysteries of the cosmos. He is also enrolled in the Master’s program in Mathematics and Applications: Research and Interactions, which will run parallel to his primary program. This unique opportunity will allow him to pursue two master’s programs within one year, providing an interdisciplinary research experience at the intersection of astronomy and data science, complemented by advanced mathematical skills. It is truly a win–win situation, equipping him with top-quality expertise to excel in this domain.
Adding to this remarkable achievement, Annus has also been awarded the prestigious MOBIL’ITI Scholarship for Fall 2025–2026 under the Interdisciplinary Thematic Institute (ITI).

The Department of Space Science and the Institute of Space Technology (IST) take great pride in his accomplishments and extend heartfelt congratulations. We acknowledge the dedicated efforts of Dr. Abdul Kabir Khan, whose guidance and mentorship played a vital role in shaping this success.

The Department of Space Science at IST wishes Annus Haider continued success as he embarks on this exciting new chapter, contributing to the advancement of astrophysics and inspiring future space scientists. 🌠
