Building the Future of Petroleum Geoscience 🇵🇰🔬

The 2nd Batch of the Internship Program at HDIP Islamabad Operations has successfully completed its internship! 🎓✨

Students from different universities participated in the program and gained valuable practical exposure to Petroleum Testing and Petroleum Research, with a focus on analytical techniques used in Petroleum Geology and Geochemistry.

The internship provided an opportunity for students to experience a professional research environment, understand the application of modern analytical techniques, and strengthen the connection between academic knowledge and practical laboratory work.

The successful completion of the internship was marked by a Certificate Distribution Ceremony, recognizing the students for their participation and learning.

New Research Publication:

We are pleased to share a new research publication from the Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan (HDIP) team:

“Geochemical Characteristics and Hydrocarbon Potential of Early Jurassic Siliciclastic Source Rocks along Eastern Tethys (Datta Formation), Potwar Sub-basin, Pakistan”

Published in Physics and Chemistry of the Earth, Parts A/B/C by Elsevier, this study provides an integrated assessment of the source-rock characteristics, organic matter type, depositional environment, thermal maturity, and hydrocarbon potential of the Early Jurassic Datta Formation across the Potwar Sub-basin, Pakistan.

The research integrates Rock-Eval pyrolysis, total organic carbon (TOC), organic petrography, biomarker geochemistry, and 1-D basin modelling to evaluate the petroleum generation potential and thermal evolution of the formation.

The findings highlight significant variations in source-rock quality across the Potwar Sub-basin and provide valuable insights into the petroleum system and hydrocarbon prospectivity of the Early Jurassic succession in Pakistan.

Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik has directed the Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan (HDIP) and the Directorate General of Petroleum Concessions (DGPC) to submit a comprehensive restructuring plan within two weeks aimed at strengthening the institute’s governance, efficiency, and strategic role in Pakistan’s energy sector.
The directive was issued during the Minister’s visit to HDIP headquarters and laboratory facilities, where he reviewed the institute’s operations, technical capabilities, and testing services. During the visit, the Minister toured various laboratories and observed the analytical, certification, and testing services being provided to support the petroleum sector.

📄 New Research Publication: Microfacies and Diagenetic Synthesis of the Kirthar Formation 📄
​The Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan (HDIP) is pleased to share that our team’s latest research article has been published in Carbonates and Evaporites (Springer Nature).
​The paper, titled “Microfacies and Diagenetic Synthesis of the Late Early–Middle Eocene Kirthar Formation, Waziristan, Pakistan: Implications for Reservoir Characterization,” presents an integrated microfacies and diagenetic analysis of the Eocene Kirthar carbonates. The study refines reservoir characterization by examining depositional textures, diagenetic alterations, porosity evolution, and the controls influencing reservoir quality within carbonate systems.
​This work provides valuable insights into carbonate reservoir heterogeneity and contributes to a better understanding of petroleum prospectivity in Waziristan and analogous geological settings.
​Congratulations to the research team on this contribution to Pakistan’s geoscience community.
