Derived from the Arabic word Ashra meaning “ten”
‘Ashura is the tenth day of Muharram. The Prophet SAW encouraged fasting on this day and intended to also fast on the ninth to distinguish from the Jewish practice
[Muslim 1134]

Occurs on the 10th day of Muharram during the sacred month of Allāh [Muslim 1163]
Prophet Musa Alay Salam was saved from Fir’awn (Pharoah)
[Bukhari 3397]
Fasting on this day is a means of expiation for sins from the previous year
[Muslim 1162a]
The ark of Prophet Nuh Alay Salam came to rest at Mount Judiyy
[Tafsir Ibn Kathir]
