In our piece, 'The Future of Arms Control: What Follows the End of New START' Published in the Australian Institute of International Affairs, Dr. Anum Riaz and I examine the looming expiration of the New START Treaty in 2026 and it's potential implications for global arms control. The article highlights growing concerns over unchecked nuclear expansion, especially in the absence of a binding arms control agreement. We discussed the rising geopolitical tenaiins, particularly between the U.S and Russia, and the potential risks posed by the lack of new framework for arms control. While confidence building measures could help pave the way for future negotiations, we argue that the lack of political will on both sides present a significant challenges, signaling a bleak outlook for global disarmament efforts in the years ahead.
