“The variety of activities and exercises that take place in gymnastics allow neural pathways in the brain to open up. Bilateral movements commonly found in basic gymnastics skills help the communication between the left and the right hemispheres of the brain; this is an essential ability when reading.

Gymnastics has been proven to enhance children’s academic achievement. By participating in gymnastics your allowing your children to become more confident learners and prepare their minds for later in life.” -

Emotional development is vital in helping children grow into well adjusted adults.

Neuroscientific advances demonstrate that the age range from 0 to 5 years old represents a critical window for both learning and teaching, which must involve the development of emotional competence and the growth of self-regulation as a foundation for long-term academic, personal, and social success, promoting mental health and well-being.

These capacities emerge from the co-regulation of empathic social and emotional interactions between a caregiver and young child.
Housman, D.K. (2017)

Following this post we will explore the importance of socio-emotional development and how caregivers can facilitate this process in children.

“When you begin to witness a small child, not only are they aware of order, but genuinely distressed by disorder.”
(The Secret of Childhood)

This is a fascinating period of child growth where they gain the ability to categorize and organize information to maintain both internal and external order.

TIPS TO HELP YOUR CHILD GROW GRADUALLY FROM EGOCENTRICITY:

1) EMPATHY
Show empathy towards your child as a way to teach caring behavior. When children are listened to and their feelings are accepted, they are more likely to respond to other people with understanding and compassion.

2) GIVING
Share with your child when you make donations and explain to them why you make such charitable contributions.
This helps to increase your child's awareness of other people's situations and realize that there is a world beyond themselves that can benefit from their attention.

3) MODEL BEHAVIOR
Show appreciation and kindness in your daily interactions with other people.

4) FEELINGS
Talk about feelings by using television shows and books to help your children consider how the different characters may be feelings in a given situation.

In a child's world it's "all about me" most of the time. this is not because they are selfish - instead it happens because they cannot see the world from other's point of view just yet.

This is called egocentrism. according to Piaget the egocentric child assumes that other people see, hear and feel exactly the same as the child does.

Children are driven by their own will and self interest during this stage. This is important for the development of self before they become mature to more social aspects of their life and subjugate their will to meet needs of others.

We can learn so much about our children just by observing them for a while. It is our responsibility to not only give them quality activity to engage in but also allow them to find one based on their own interest, so that they can absorb it. Observations will also help you notice and unfold why certain behaviours occur in your child overtime.

Taking careful notice of what your child can do and enjoy will provide evidence upon which you can base future plans for the child, either it be play, academics or extra curricular activities.
