⚖️ Legal Ethics for Advocates in Pakistan

(Under the 1973 Act and 1976 Rules)

🔹 1. Duty Towards the Court
• Always act with respect and dignity toward the court.
• Never mislead the court by false statements or concealment of facts.
• Do not use undignified, scandalous, or offensive language in court.
• Avoid unnecessary adjournments and delay tactics.
• Advocate must assist the court in justice, not just act in favor of the client.

🔹 2. Duty Towards the Client
• Maintain complete confidentiality of the client’s matters, even after the case ends.
• Do not represent a client when there is a conflict of interest.
• Avoid overcharging fees or taking advantage of a client’s ignorance.
• Keep the client informed of case progress.
• Must act with loyalty, honesty, and diligence in all matters.

🔹 3. Duty Towards the Profession
• Avoid unethical practices such as:
• Touting
• Bribing
• Influencing witnesses or judges
• Do not advertise or solicit clients through pamphlets, social media, or personal claims.
• Show respect and cooperation towards fellow lawyers.

🔹 4. Duty Towards Opponents
• Do not insult, threaten, or misbehave with the opposing party or their lawyer.
• Maintain a spirit of fairness, even while being firm.
• Do not engage in personal animosity or baseless allegations.

🔹 5. Duty Towards the Bar Council
• Must follow rules, pay annual fees, and maintain active membership.
• Cooperate in elections and disciplinary processes.
• Report professional misconduct if observed in other lawyers.

• Promote justice, rule of law, and public interest.
• Offer pro bono services to poor or marginalized individuals when possible.
• Uphold the dignity of the legal profession in public life.
