Australian scientists have made an exciting breakthrough in the global recycling crisis by using backyard mold to break down polypropylene, a type of plastic used for items like takeaway containers and cling film. They found that two types of fungi commonly found in plants and soil, Aspergillus terreus and Engyodontium album, can be used to break down this stubborn plastic. The fungi took 90 days to degrade 27% of the plastic and 140 days to completely break it down after being exposed to ultraviolet rays or heat. This discovery could help alleviate the global plastic waste problem within a few years.
