A bit dose of knowledge!
Question: Explain differences Benching, shoring, Sloping and Shielding?
Is there any depth required?
•Benching – this is a method of preventing collapse by excavating the sides of an excavation to create a series of steps to reduce the wall height of the excavation.
1.5 meters deep or greater require a protective system ( Benching) unless the excavation is made entirely in stable rock. If less than 5 feet deep, a competent person may determine that a protective system is required or not required
•SHORING - Shoring is provided for excavation safety. Purpose of shoring is to protect the edges of an excavation to prevent cave-in or collapse of the excavation.
Example As per Saudi Aramco std Hydraulic shoring can be used for protection against cave-ins in excavations that do not
exceed 6 m (20 ft) in depth.
Timber shoring can be used as a method of protection against cave-ins in excavations that do
not exceed 6 m (20 ft) in depth.
•SLOPING - Sloping involves cutting back the trench wall at an angle inclined away from the excavation. Shoring requires installing aluminum hydraulic or other types of supports to prevent soil movement and cave-ins.
A type soil sloping will be ,53 degree
B type soil 45degree
C type soil 34 degree
•Shielding - protects workers by using trench boxes or other types of supports to prevent soil cave-ins.
