It's not about the gap- it's about the growth." One of the toughest questions you'll face in the ISSB interview is "What did you do during your gap year?" It looks simple. But it's a psychological mirror. They aren't checking your past. They're checking your pattern.
They want to know - when life slowed down, did you stop... or did you grow quietly?
Every gap year has a story. Some took it to prepare sincerely for defence exams.
Some were recovering from health issues. Some were figuring out their purpose. And some were just trying to become mentally stronger before they tried again. Whatever your story own it. Don't hide behind excuses like "Sir, I was just preparing." That answer doesn't show maturity it shows vagueness.
Show them your discipline. Tell them your process. Did you read, volunteer, teach, work out, or improve your English? Did you manage your time, emotions, and self-doubt? That's what the interviewer wants to see. Because in uniform, there will be pauses, setbacks, and waiting.

Did you manage your time, emotions, and self-doubt? That's what the interviewer wants to see. Because in uniform, there will be pauses, setbacks, and waiting.
And only those who stay productive even in
uncertainty rise as leaders. So, when they ask "What did you do during your gap year?" Say with pride, "I used it to become a better version of myself." Because that's the essence of being an officer turning every gap into growth.

"Suleiman the Magnificent"
Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Suleiman, 29 PMA L/C ORD - SSG was 1971 Pakistan Army hero. A hero of the 1971 war who rescued a wounded comrade, Maj. P.D. Khan, after the Pakistani surrender, eventually escorting him to safety in Pakistan.
The friend he carried on his shoulders was one Major PD Khan who was 2nd-in-command of 2 Commando Battalion (Suleiman's Battalion). PD Khan was recovering in CMH Dacca from a bullet wound. Suleiman went to the CMH and asked PD Khan to accompany him who refused fearing he would hamper Suleiman's escape. Suleiman hit PD Khan in the neck following which he lifted his unconscious friend on his shoulders and made good his escape. The duo extricated to Burma, neighboring East Pakistan.
PD Khan later became Lieutenant General PD Khan and commanded 30 Corp Gujranwala of Pakistan Army.
Suleiman was Gen. Musharaf's course-mate from 29 PMA Long Course. Due to his courage, valor, commitment and matchless show of defiance, Suleiman is labeled 'Suleiman The Magnificent' by former president Pervez Musharraf and his peers.
He died in December 2019 at the Combined Military Hospital in Lahore, with the Pakistan Army chief paying tribute to him.
