Chaudhary Qamar Iqbal, President Pakistan Union Norway visited the University of Gujrat (UoG) along with the senior journalist and Ex-President Gujrat Press Club Mr Waseem Ashraf Butt, and former Superintendent of Police Mr Afzal Virk. They held a meeting with the Vice Chancellor UoG, Prof Dr Zia-ul-Qayyum discussing the active role of community in the advancement of higher learning in Pakistan. Chaudhary Qamar assured Dr Zia of the active participation of Norwegian Pakistani community for collection of funds for UoG Endowment Fund. He said that Norwegian Pakistanis were proud of UoG imparting quality education to the students of this region. He was of the view that UoG had opened up new vistas of progress and development of this region. Chaudhary Qamar also invited Dr Zia to Norway to attend the Pakistan Day celebrations. Mr Waseem said that the Norwegian Pakistanis had soft passions for true economic and social progress of Pakistan and they wanted to contribute their services for institutional development in Pakistan. Dr Zia said that the universities were heralds of positive change and remarkable social progress in a society. He told that UoG was trying its best to achieve the goal of social and economic development of Pakistani society for transforming the fate of nation. He said that globalization had inclined the institutions towards autonomy. He told that an endowment fund had been established in UoG and now it was the responsibility of community, raising funds for this endowment for facilitating the deserving students. He appreciated the aspirations of Norwegian Pakistani community for further improvement of UoG.

Press Release: A seminar on “Translation and Pakistani Media” was held in the Video Conference Hall of Hafiz Hayat Campus of the University of Gujrat (UoG) on Tuesday, February 03, 2015. The objective of this seminar, organized by the Center for Languages & Translation Studies (CeLTS) UoG, was to review the problems faced by the media persons while translating from other languages of the world for electronic and print media. The CeLTS established by the UoG is a dynamic center producing authentic translators equipped with knowledge of the concepts and principles which ensure the production of reliable translations. The famous anchor of Dunya TV and columnist, Mr Habib Akram was the guest speaker of this seminar. This seminar was presided over by the Vice Chancellor UoG, Prof Dr Zia-ul-Qayyum. A large number of students along with the faculty, MPhil scholars and senior administration attended this seminar on an important topic. While talking about the importance of standard translations in the domain of media, Mr Habib Akram said that globalization had given more importance to translation activity in the world. He said that the basic motive of translation was communication of ideas in a reliable way. He said that electronic and print media in Pakistan was facing many problems at the time but proficient translators could help to find out solution to this problem. He said that media required translators performing their job quickly and extempore. He emphasized upon the context and expression while translating from one language into the other. He suggested the CeLTS for producing translators in the context of present scenario of mass communication in the country. He told that a successful journalist should know many languages for producing quality in work. Mr Habib Akram also shed light upon the Islamic institution of translation. In his presidential remarks, Dr Zia said that translation had gained importance in the world and we as a nation could not make progress in the domain of knowledge without translating standard works in our own languages. He said that the translations should be accomplished not only in national language but also in the regional languages of Pakistan for achieving the goal of development, progress and national harmony. He emphasized upon the interdisciplinary research through translations. Appreciating the services and achievements of the CeLTS, he told that dissemination of knowledge to its students was the primary responsibility of UoG. He said that study of languages helped us to apprehend the cultural norms of a community, nation or country. He asserted that globalization had introduced a knowledge depth and the scope of translation had increased in the contemporary world. Sheikh Abdul Rashid, Director Media UoG said that translation was a doorstep to understand the people of other nations; the developed nations had given a high importance to transnational activities. He said that translation helped to discover new horizons of knowledge. He told that revolution of media had envisaged our lives and there was a need of best people in this area of vital importance. He said that UoG was promoting research creating innovative approach about knowledge among the students. Mr Ghulam Ali, Coordinator CeLTS said that the world had shaped into a global village where the sharing of knowledge had become vibrant. He said that translation work could help a lot for this sharing of knowledge. He said that media helped to organize intercultural relations among different nations, so translation was the basic need of media. He told that the CeLTS of UoG could perform its duties as a basic forum for media providing competent translators. He welcomed all the guests hopefully. An inaugural ceremony of the research journal “Pakistan Journal of Languages and Translation Studies” published by the CeLTS was organized on this occasion. Dr Zia and Mr Habib Akram performed the ceremonial inauguration of this journal. MPhil scholars, Mr Rashad Ullah Butt and Mr Suleman Ijaz presented a detailed report about the services, achievements and activities of the CeLTS.
