πŸ›°οΈ Different Types of Resolution in Remote Sensing

In remote sensing, satellite images are not only about β€œseeing the Earth from space.” Their quality and usefulness depend strongly on different types of resolution.

Understanding these resolutions is essential for GIS, environmental monitoring, agriculture, climate studies, and Earth observation.

1️⃣ Spectral Resolution
Spectral resolution describes the ability of a sensor to detect different wavelength bands of the electromagnetic spectrum.

In simple words:
πŸ‘‰ It tells us how many spectral bands a satellite can capture and how narrow those bands are.

A sensor with more and narrower bands can better distinguish between different materials such as vegetation, water, soil, urban areas, and minerals.

Examples:
- Multispectral sensors capture a limited number of broad bands
- Hyperspectral sensors capture many narrow bands with more detail

πŸ’‘ Spectral resolution = wavelength detail

2️⃣ Radiometric Resolution
Radiometric resolution describes how sensitive a sensor is to small differences in reflected or emitted energy.

In simple words:
πŸ‘‰ It tells us how many brightness levels the sensor can record.

For example:
- 8-bit data = 256 brightness levels
- 12-bit data = 4,096 brightness levels
- 16-bit data = 65,536 brightness levels

Higher radiometric resolution helps detect subtle differences in surface conditions, such as vegetation stress, soil moisture variation, or water quality changes.

πŸ’‘ Radiometric resolution = brightness sensitivity

3️⃣ Temporal Resolution
Temporal resolution describes how often a satellite revisits the same place on Earth.

In simple words:
πŸ‘‰ It tells us how frequently we can monitor change.

High temporal resolution is very useful for tracking dynamic phenomena such as floods, droughts, crop growth, wildfires, storms, and seasonal vegetation changes.

For example, a satellite that revisits an area every 5 days has better temporal resolution than one that revisits every 16 days.

πŸ’‘ Temporal resolution = revisit frequency

βœ… Why does this matter?

Choosing the right satellite data depends on your objective:

🌱 For vegetation health β†’ spectral resolution is important
🌊 For flood monitoring β†’ temporal resolution is critical
🌑️ For subtle surface changes β†’ radiometric resolution matters
πŸ—ΊοΈ For detailed mapping β†’ spatial resolution is also important

In short:
πŸ“‘ Spectral = what wavelengths are detected
🎚️ Radiometric = how much brightness detail is captured
πŸ•’ Temporal = how often the area is observed

Remote sensing is powerful because it allows us to monitor the Earth across space, time, and spectral information.

Sustainable Solutions & Policy Consultants Pvt. Ltd. appeared before the Environmental Assessment Advisory Committee (EAAC) during its meeting held on April 21, 2026 at the Gilgit-Baltistan Environmental Protection Agency.

The meeting was convened under the Gilgit-Baltistan Environmental Protection Act, 2014 and GB-EPA Review of IEE/EIA Regulations, 2024 to review projects requiring Initial Environmental Examination (IEE).

We presented the IEE presentations to the committee for the following projects:
β€’ Lead Ore (Galena) Mining at Duduro Sagar & Lang Jut, Kargah Valley
β€’ Placer Gold Mining at Nomal – Jutal – Rahimabad, District Gilgit

The session included participation from key government departments and stakeholders, ensuring a comprehensive environmental review process.

🌧️ Main Sources for Rainfall Data Download (GIS)

Rainfall data is essential in GIS, hydrology, climate studies, agriculture, and flood modeling. Today, several free and reliable global datasets are available for geospatial analysis. Below are five of the most widely used rainfall data sources in GIS:

1️⃣ CHIRPS

High-resolution (~5 km) rainfall data combining satellite imagery and ground stations, covering 1981–present. Ideal for drought and climate studies.

2️⃣ NASA GPM (IMERG)

Satellite-based rainfall estimates with hourly to daily resolution, suitable for flood monitoring and extreme rainfall analysis.

3️⃣ NOAA CPC

Daily global and regional precipitation datasets used for climate monitoring and seasonal analysis.

4️⃣ ERA5 (ECMWF)

Climate reanalysis rainfall data with hourly and monthly outputs, widely used in climate and hydrological modeling.

5️⃣ WorldClim

High-resolution long-term precipitation averages, mainly used for ecological and environmental modeling.

A massive lithium deposit has been discovered in the United States that could reshape the global battery industry. According to Earth dot com, scientists found the deposit beneath the McDermitt Caldera, an ancient supervolcano located on the Nevada and Oregon border. Researchers estimate it could contain between 20 to 40 million metric tons of lithium, making it potentially the largest known reserve in the world.

According to Engineerine, the value of the deposit is estimated at around 1.5 trillion dollars. This calculation is based on the average U.S. contract price for lithium carbonate, which is about 37,000 dollars per ton. If fully extracted, the deposit could supply enough lithium to meet global demand for decades, significantly impacting the production of electric vehicles and renewable energy storage.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): From Prevention to Strategy

LCA is more than an impact measurement tool, it is a prevention-oriented, decision-support framework guiding design, optimization, and strategic planning.

The type of LCA matters depending on the stage and goal:

1 Ecodesign & Early Planning - Attributional LCA (ALCA)

Identify environmental hotspots, inform

material and design choices, and prevent

impacts from the start.

2 Process Analysis & Baseline Assessment ALCA Quantify inputs/outputs across processes to understand current performance.

3 Process Optimization & Scaling Consequential LCA (CLCA)

Evaluate environmental consequences of production changes, scaling, or supply chain modifications.

4 Strategic Planning & Future Scenarios Prospective LCA (PLCA)
Forecast impacts of emerging technologies or future scenarios to guide sustainable strategies.

Environmental Example: CBAM (Carbon

Border Adjustment Mechanism) encourages companies to reduce upstream carbon emissions in their supply chains. Using LCA, we can quantify the potential reduction in GHG emissions from raw material sourcing, energy use, and transport, helping businesses proactively adapt to carbon pricing policies.

5 Rapid Assessment & Continuous Improvement - Streamlined / Simplified LCA Quickly track hotspots and support iterative decision-making.

Key Takeaway: By integrating LCA at the right stage, organizations can prevent impacts, optimize processes, and align with environmental regulations like CBAM, turning LCA into a roadmap for strategic environmental action**.

New ESG Reporting Standards for a Greener Pakistan

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has issued revised ESG Disclosure Guidelines for listed companies. Aligned with the Pakistan Green Taxonomy, these guidelines provide a standardized framework for reporting climate-related risks, opportunities, and sustainable economic activities.

Key Highlights:

Standardized reporting aligned with Pakistan Green Taxonomy (PGT).

Practical guidance for companies to apply the PGT.

Voluntary adoption until June 2029, followed by a mandatory three-phase implementation.

This move strengthens sustainability reporting, aims to boost investor confidence, and supports Pakistan's climate transition and national development goals.
