Establishing a kiwi orchard in Gilgit Baltistan presents a promising venture, capitalizing on the region's unique climate and topography. The cool temperatures and high altitudes of Gilgit Baltistan create an ideal environment for kiwi cultivation, fostering the growth of high-quality fruits. The picturesque landscapes and fertile soil offer an excellent foundation for orchard development. This endeavor not only holds economic potential but also contributes to agricultural diversification, enhancing the region's resilience. The introduction of a kiwi orchard in Gilgit Baltistan aligns with sustainable agriculture practices, making it a noteworthy investment in the region's agricultural landscape. Furthermore, PARC Mountain Agriculture Research Center Gilgit Baltistan has taken further steps in this regard. It has established more than 8 experimental kiwi orchards in farmer fields of various districts of GB. The establishment of a kiwi orchard in Gilgit Baltistan not only promises economic opportunities but also brings forth significant health benefits for the local community. Kiwi, known for its rich vitamin C content, can play a crucial role in boosting immunity in a region where access to diverse nutritional sources may be limited. Additionally, the fruit is laden with antioxidants, aiding in overall health and well-being. The establishment of a kiwi orchard thus becomes a holistic investment, contributing not just to the local economy but also to the health and nutritional welfare of the inhabitants in Gilgit Baltistan.
Budding is a form of asexual reproduction in plants. There are various types of budding:
1. T-budding (Shield Budding): In this method, a single bud or "shield" with a small piece of bark is taken from one plant and inserted into a T-shaped incision on the bark of the rootstock.
2. Chip Budding: A small, shield-shaped piece of bud and bark is cut from the donor plant and inserted into a similar incision in the rootstock. It's commonly used in fruit tree propagation.
3. Patch Budding: A patch of bark containing buds is removed from the donor plant and placed on a corresponding area of the rootstock. This method is often used for roses.
4. Tube or Annular Budding: A ring of bark with buds is taken from the donor plant and placed around a similar-sized ring on the rootstock.
These methods enable the propagation of plants with desirable characteristics without relying on seeds.
Grafting is a horticultural technique involving the joining of two plant parts to grow as one. Common types include:
1. Whip-and-Tongue Grafting: Both the scion and rootstock are cut at matching angles for a secure union.
2. Cleft Grafting:A vertical slit is made in the rootstock, and a wedge-shaped scion is inserted.
3. Bud Grafting:A single bud with a small piece of bark is grafted onto the rootstock.
4. Side-veneer Grafting: A section of the side of the scion is matched to a similar area on the rootstock.
5. Inarch Grafting: The scion is grafted onto the rooted shoot while it's still attached to the parent plant.
