Short history of biology:

Ancient Greeks: Aristotle and Theophrastus laid foundations for botany and zoology (300 BCE).
Microscope invention: Antonie van Leeuwenhoek discovered microorganisms (1676).
Cell theory: Matthias Jakob Schleiden and Theodor Schwann proposed cell structure (1839).
Charles Darwin's evolution theory: Published "On the Origin of Species" (1859).
Gregor Mendel's genetics: Discovered laws of inheritance (1865).
James Watson and Francis Crick: Described DNA structure (1953).
Molecular biology emerged: Understanding biological processes at molecular level.

*The Origin of Life: Biogenesis vs Abiogenesis*

The question of how life originated on Earth has puzzled scientists and philosophers for centuries. Two fundamental theories, biogenesis and abiogenesis, attempt to explain the emergence of life from non-living matter.

*Biogenesis*

Biogenesis proposes that life can only arise from pre-existing life. This theory suggests that living organisms can only be generated by other living organisms. In other words, life begets life. Biogenesis is supported by the fact that all known living organisms reproduce by generating offspring that inherit their characteristics. This theory is widely accepted in the scientific community, as it is consistent with our current understanding of biology and the natural world.

*Abiogenesis*

Abiogenesis, on the other hand, proposes that life can emerge from non-living matter. This theory suggests that the building blocks of life, such as amino acids and nucleotides, can spontaneously assemble into living organisms. Abiogenesis is supported by laboratory experiments that have successfully created simple organic compounds from inorganic substances. While abiogenesis is still a topic of debate, it provides a plausible explanation for the origin of life on Earth.

Biology is the study of living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, evolution, and interactions.
It explores life processes across molecular, cellular, organismal, and ecological levels.
Biology helps us understand life and its role in shaping the world around us.

ELECTRON TRANSPORT CHAIN

The Electron Transport Chain (ETC) is a series of protein complexes and molecules embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane that play a key role in cellular respiration. It is the final stage of aerobic respiration, where high-energy electrons from NADH and FADH₂ are transferred through a series of complexes to ultimately produce ATP.

Key Steps in ETC:

1. Electron Donation: NADH and FADH₂ donate electrons to Complex I and Complex II, respectively.

2. Electron Transfer: Electrons move through a series of complexes (I, II, III, IV) via mobile carriers like ubiquinone (CoQ) and cytochrome c.

3. Proton Pumping: As electrons pass through the complexes, protons (H⁺) are pumped from the mitochondrial matrix into the intermembrane space, creating an electrochemical gradient.

4. ATP Synthesis: Protons flow back into the matrix through ATP synthase, driving the production of ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate (Pi).

5. Oxygen as Final Electron Acceptor: Oxygen combines with electrons and protons to form water, completing the process.
