Today marks 100 years since Rudyard Kipling donated a corrected autograph manuscript of his poem ‘If—' to Cambridge University Library. 📜

Here we see a version of ‘If—' with the poet’s corrections. It differs in several respects from the published version we know today; especially lines 5 to 8 of the first stanza, which read in their final form:

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise…

Later this year, the manuscript will go on display at Kipling’s family home, Bateman’s in Sussex.
