"Mosquito Surveillance and Disease Prevention By Department of Entomology, University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF)Pakistan"
As we navigate the aftermath of monsoon rains in Pakistan, mosquito populations surge, posing significant public health risks. Mosquito-borne diseases like dengue fever and malaria are prevalent in our region, and it's crucial to understand the dynamics of mosquito breeding and disease transmission.
Breeding Sites:
1. Stagnant water in containers, tires, and other household items
2. Poor drainage systems and flooded areas
3. Water accumulation in construction sites, parks, and public spaces
Transmission:
1. Dengue fever: a major public health concern in Pakistan, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes
2. Malaria: another significant mosquito-borne disease, transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes
Strategies:
1. Eliminate standing water and discard water-containing bodies
2. Implement integrated vector management (IVM) strategies
3. Conduct regular mosquito surveillance and monitoring
4. Raise public awareness about mosquito-borne disease prevention
As a medical entomologist/public health professional, I urge everyone to take proactive measures to prevent mosquito breeding and disease transmission. Let's work together to create a healthier environment and protect our communities from mosquito-borne diseases.

Huanglongbing Citrus Greening disease
ایک سنگین بیماری ہے۔جو سٹرس کے باغات کی تباہی کا سب سے بڑی زمہ دار ہیے ۔
یہ بیماری عام طور پر "ڈریگن ییلوز" یا گریننگ ڈیزیز کہلاتی ہے۔ اور یہ بیماری ایک بیکٹیریا
Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus
کی وجہ سے ہوتی ہے اور اس کو ایک چھوٹا کیڑا
Asian Citrus Psyllid– Diaphorina citri پھیلانے کا ذریعہ بنتا ہے۔
یہ کیڑا سٹرس کے نئے کونپلوں اور پتوں کا رس چوستا ہے۔ اگر کیڑا پہلے سے متاثرہ درخت سے فیڈ کر کے آیا ہو، تو بیکٹیریا اس کے جسم میں ہوتے ہیں۔
جب یہ کیرئیر کیڑا صحت مند پودے کا رس چوستا ہے، تو بیکٹیریا اس کے لعاب کے ذریعے پودے کی فلوئم نالیوں میں داخل ہو جاتے ہیں۔ اور پھر یہ
بیکٹیریا پودے کی فلوئم نالیوں جن سے پودے میں خوراک حرکت کرتی ہے۔ بڑھنے لگتے ہیں، جس سے نالیاں بند ہونا شروع ہو جاتی ہیں۔
یہ نالیاں بند ہونے کا عمل کئی سال لگا دیتا ہیے۔ اور ابھی تک پودے کی نالیوں کے اندر اس بکٹیریا کو مارنا کسی زہر سے سو فیصد ممکن نہیں ہوا۔ لیکن جدید سائنس پودے میں اس کی موجودگی کا پتا لگا لیتی ہیے۔ اور اگر کسی پودے میں اس کی موجودگی کے آثار ملیں

Hands-on experience in the field! On June 12, 2025, I visited a sugar cane field and observed sugar cane pyrilla (Pyrilla spp.), gaining valuable insights into pest management in sugar cane crops.
✓ Scientific Name: Pyrilla perpusilla✓Family: Lophopidae
✓ Order: Homoptera
Host plants:Wheat, barley, oat, maize, sorghum, swank, sudan grass
:
1. It sucks phloem sap from leaves and excretes honeydew onto foliage, which results in fungal diseases.
2.This damages sugar yield and quality both directly and indirectly.
3. The active stages of the life cycles favor the underside of the leaf blades, particularly near midrib as resting and feeding sites.
4. They are inactive during early morning, evening and night, typically resting on the underside of the leaves. Between 10 to 3 pm they become very active and could be found on both sides of the leaf surfaces.
5. Poor yield is obtained due to poor growth of seed setts and difficulties in milling canes from affected plants.
6. Nymphs and adults suck sap from the leaves and can decrease sucrose content Due to desaping, leaves turn pale yellow and later on dry up.
7. Black mould interferes with photosynthesis and very little sugar is obtained due to utilization of sucrose.
8. Cane juice becomes high in glucose, turns insipid and if used for making ‘Gur’ give rise to soggy mass which does not solidify properly.

Epipyrops melanoleuca an egg parasitoid , Ladybird beetle predator for its eggs and nymphs, White muscardine fungus, Metarrhizium anisopliae

The green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea, is a key component in biological control programs, targeting aphids, caterpillars, thrips, and mealybugs. The larvae utilize venom to immobilize prey, thereby initiating internal digestion. Green lacewing larvae are frequently used in cannabis, vegetable, and ornamental plant cultivation. Release rates are determined by factors such as climate and pest density, generally ranging from 10-12 larvae or 20-25 eggs per square meter for preventive control.

Campaign For The Management of Mango Mealybug In Mango Orchards By the Students At University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pakistan Under The Supervision of "Professor Dr. Waseem Akram" The Chairman of The Department of Entomology (Plant Protection).
"Trunk Banding" or "Tree Trunk Banding" It's a common technique used to manage mango mealybug populations, especially when they're migrating from the lower parts of the tree to the upper parts.
1. Wrap a plastic sheet or a sticky tape around the trunk of the mango tree, usually 3-4 feet above the ground.
2. Apply a lubricating material like grease or petroleum jelly to the plastic sheet or tape. This will help prevent the mealybugs from crawling across.
The idea behind this method is that when the mealybugs try to migrate upwards, they'll get stuck to the sticky tape or grease, preventing them from reaching the upper parts of the tree.
✓Advantages:
Trunk banding is a simple, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly method that can be used in combination with other Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to manage mango mealybug populations.
✓Results:
After implementing the trunk banding method, a significant number of mango mealybugs particularly Nymphs, were successfully trapped on the plastic sheet as shown in pictures. As evident from the picture, the majority of the trapped mealybugs were found on the lower portion of the plastic sheet, indicating the effectiveness of this technique in preventing their upward migration.
