Have you ever noticed how a single letter can completely change meaning?

Take this simple example:
CAT → BAT → HAT

Only one sound changes, yet your mind instantly builds a totally new meaning.

That’s the beauty of Structural Linguistics.

According to Ferdinand de Saussure, language works as a system of signs where words don’t carry meaning alone—they gain meaning through their difference from other words.

So “cat” means what it means partly because it is not “bat,” “cap,” or “car.”

In other words, language is less about isolated words and more about the relationships between them.

This idea shapes how we understand:
🔹 communication
🔹 branding & slogans
🔹 literature
🔹 media messages
🔹 everyday conversations

Even emojis work this way.
Compare:
❤️ vs 💔
Same symbol family, completely different meanings through contrast.

The way language creates meaning is honestly everywhere once you start noticing it.

👉 Try this in the comments:
Change one letter in any word and show how the meaning transforms.

Example:
LIGHT → NIGHT

Let’s build a thread of fascinating word shifts from different languages 🌍👇

An Ecolinguistic Analysis of Metaphorical Representation of Tropical Storm Megi in Philippine News Discourse: A Corpus-Based Study

Authors:
Tariq Amin (University of Lakki Marwat)
Prof. Dr. Wasima Shehzad (Professor, Department of English, Air University Islamabad, Pakistan)
Pages: 31–45
Published: December 25, 2025

This study investigates how Philippine news media metaphorically construct Tropical Storm Agaton (Megi) and how such representations shape environmental narratives. Using a corpus-based qualitative approach and grounded in Stibbe’s Stories Framework and Conceptual Metaphor Theory, the findings reveal dominant metaphors that portray the storm as a violent and antagonistic force. The article highlights how these metaphorical framings promote a destructive environmental narrative while marginalising broader systemic factors such as climate change, calling for more sustainable and responsible discursive practices.
