Wechselpräpositionen are German prepositions that can take two different grammatical cases — depending on whether there is movement or location.

The word means “changing prepositions” because the case changes.

The Wechselpräpositionen

an, auf, in, über, unter, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen

How they work

They follow a simple rule:

Akkusativ → when there is movement toward a place
(Wohin? – Where to?)

Dativ → when there is no movement, just position
(Wo? – Where?)

Examples

Movement → Akkusativ
Ich gehe in die Schule.
(I’m going into the school.)

Location → Dativ
Ich bin in der Schule.
(I’m in the school.)

Another pair:
Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch. → movement
Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. → location

In short

Wechselpräpositionen are prepositions that switch between Akkusativ and Dativ based on whether something is moving or staying in place. Once you remember “movement vs. location,” the concept becomes much easier.
