Windows XP Is Back
If you miss the good old days of Windows XP, you'll appreciate this web-based project attempting to bring it back. Shared on the r/windows subreddit by user ducbao414, the project recreates the visual style and feel of Microsoft's classic operating system from 2001, thanks to touches like the startup animation and the beloved "Bliss" desktop wallpaper. The emulation runs through win32.run (yes, it's a webpage, not a file), so even macOS users can use it.
This browser-based version of Windows XP is not an actual OS. Instead, it is a careful recreation containing many of the original interface elements and familiar games. Users will find preloaded classics such as 3D Pinball Space Cadet, Solitaire, and Minesweeper, which are ready to play. I tried my hand at Paint and traveled back in time; it was such a fun experience.
Some functions are missing, though. The Internet Explorer icon does not work, which means you can't connect to the webโafter all, the emulation is the web. The project is also unable to run other programs like a real operating system. Finally, a few Reddit users have noted that the UX sounds don't always play correctly.
Ducbao414 says the project is intended to bring back fond memories for those who miss XP. The release is tied to a milestone: This month marks 25 years since Microsoft's work on Windows XP first began.
