Resurrection Plant: Miracle of the Desert

In the heart of the desert, there exists a plant that seems to defy death itself. Known as the Resurrection Plant or Selaginella lepidophylla, this astonishing plant can survive for years in a completely dry state and returns to life within a few hours of receiving water.

According to Discover Wild Science, during droughts, the plant curls into a tight, brown ball, drastically reducing its surface area to conserve moisture. In this dried-up state, it appears lifeless, brown, and motionless. But as soon as it receives water, it begins to unfurl and turns green, almost immediately resuming photosynthesis and growth.

The Secret of Life: Anhydrobiosis

This extraordinary transformation is made possible by a survival mechanism called anhydrobiosis. According to The Nature of Home, the Resurrection Plant produces protective sugars like trehalose and specific proteins that stabilize its cells and membranes during extreme dryness. These compounds allow the plant to nearly shut down all metabolic activity without damage, essentially putting itself into suspended animation until conditions improve.

Native to Mexico’s Chihuahuan Desert and the southwestern United States, the Resurrection Plant is adapted to thrive in some of the harshest environments on Earth. Its ability to "come back to life" has fascinated scientists and inspired research into drought-resistant crops and long-term biological preservation. امریکہ اور روس کے درمیان دنیا کے دو بڑے سمندروں (بحر الکاہل اور آرکٹک) کے جمے ہوئے پانی میں یہ دو جزیرے کھڑے ہیں۔ انہیں "ڈایامیڈ جزائر" کہا جاتا ہے۔ ان میں سے بائیں والا بڑا جزیرہ روس کے کنٹرول میں ہے، اور دائیں والا چھوٹا جزیرہ امریکہ کا حصہ ہے۔

دونوں جزیروں میں فاصلہ صرف 3.5 کلو میٹر کا ہے، لیکن دونوں میں ٹائم کا فرق دیکھا جائے تو روس والا جزیرہ امریکہ کے جزیرے سے تقریباً 21 گھنٹے اگے ہے۔ یعنی اگر امریکہ والے جزیرے میں پیر کی دوپہر تین بجے ہوں گے تو روس والے جزیرے میں منگل کی دوپہر کے 12 بج چکے ہوں گے۔ یعنی صرف 3.5 کلو میٹر سفر کرنے پر آپ اگلی تاریخ میں بھی جاسکتے ہیں اور پچھلی تاریخ میں واپس بھی آسکتے۔

اس کے پیچھے کیا چکر ہے، اس کے لیے ہمیں meridians کی لائنوں کو سمجھنا ہوگا جو زمین کے نقشے کو سمجھنے کے لیے شمال سے جنوب کی طرف خیالی طور پر بنائی جاتی ہیں۔

ہماری زمین گول ہے، اور ایک گول دائرے میں 360⁰ ڈگریاں ہوتی ہیں، تو ہم زمین کے نقشے پر شمال سے جنوب 360 لائنیں بنا لیتے ہیں۔ ان لائنوں میں سے ایک لائن انگلینڈ کے علاقے "گرین وچ" سے گزرتی ہے، اسے 0⁰ ڈگری مان لیا گیا، اور یہاں کے وقت کو بھی سٹینڈرڈ مان لیا گیا، جسے "گرین وچ مین ٹائم" یعنی GMT کہا جاتا ہے۔

اس 0⁰ سے مشرق کی طرف ہر 15 لائن گزرنے کے ساتھ وقت میں ایک گھنٹے کا اضافہ ہوتا جاتا ہے۔ یعنی مشرق کی طرف ہر 15 ڈگری کے بعد GMT+1۔

جبکہ مغرب کی طرف ہر 15 لائن سے 1 گھنٹہ کم ہوتا جاتا ہے یعنی مغرب کی طرف ہر 15 ڈگری کے بعد GMT- 1۔

اس طرح جب 180⁰ کی لائن آتی ہے تو وہاں مشرق اور مغرب کے وقت میں اتنا فرق پڑ جاتا ہے کہ دونوں اطراف کی تاریخ بدل جاتی ہے، اور اس 180⁰ کی لائن کو انٹرنیشل ڈیٹ لائن کہا جاتا ہے، جو کہ بحر الکاہل میں سے گزرتی ہے۔

البتہ دنیا کے ممالک اس انٹرنیشنل ڈیٹ لائن کو پوری طرح فالو نہیں کرتے، کیونکہ یہ لائن کئی ممالک کو دو حصوں میں تقسیم کرتی ہے، مگر حکومتیں اپنے پورے ملک کا وقت اور تاریخ ایک ہی رکھتی ہیں۔

جیسے پاکستان سے تقریباً 18 لائنز گزرتی ہیں (60⁰سے 77⁰) لیکن ہم پچھہترویں (75th) لائن کے مطابق اپنا ٹائم رکھتے ہیں جو کہ GMT سے پانچ گھنٹے آگے بنتا ہے۔۔۔
