The Guidance Counseling and Testing Services Office (GCTSO) informs all incoming freshmen and transferee students that the Orientation Seminar scheduled today, August 19, 2026, for the following colleges is CANCELLED.

The cancellation is in accordance with the order of University President Dr. Nelson P. Cabral and the directive of the City Government of Zamboanga suspending face-to-face classes today. The decision also takes into consideration the tragic shooting incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga University, as the University joins the community in mourning the lives lost and expressing sympathy to all those affected.

The affected Orientation Seminar sessions will be 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞. The new schedule will be announced through the official communication channels of the Guidance Counseling and Testing Services Office (GCTSO).

Students are encouraged to remain safe, vigilant, and attentive to official announcements concerning the rescheduled Orientation Seminar.

The GCTSO extends its appreciation for everyone’s understanding, cooperation, and patience as the University prioritizes the safety and well-being of its students and the entire academic community.

The 𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 scheduled 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟳, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, has been 𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗗 following the directives of University President 𝗗𝗿. 𝗡𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗣. 𝗖𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗹 and the 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗭𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮, which suspended face-to-face classes at all levels due to the 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅.

FIVE-PESO MEALS, COLLEGE DEGREES 🎓

While classmates wondered why Claire and Apol rarely bought meals at the food court, the two MSU-IIT students were quietly facing a difficult reality: they simply did not have enough money.

Their daily allowance was once only ₱20, yet transportation already cost ₱11 going to school and another ₱11 going home. Food and other school expenses had to come from whatever remained.

When they started a small business, they could sell only during weekends. Their earnings had to last for the entire school week.

At the university food court, they found a stall selling soup for ₱5. It became their regular meal. On better days, they could add a ₱15 adobong egg.

“Araw-araw, iyon lang ang ulam namin,” they recalled.

What others saw as a simple decision not to spend was actually a daily effort to divide limited money among transportation, food, schooling, and their small business.

Despite hunger and financial uncertainty, Claire and Apol continued attending classes and completing their requirements under the College of Engineering and the College of Arts and Social Sciences at Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology.

Their years of stretching every peso eventually led them to graduation as members of MSU-IIT’s Class of 2026.

Today, the ₱5 soup is no longer only a symbol of hardship. It has become a reminder of their sacrifices, their friendship, and how far they have come.

Their story reflects the reality of many Filipino students who quietly calculate every peso just to remain in school. Behind a skipped meal may be someone doing everything possible to continue pursuing a degree.

From surviving school days with ₱5 soup to completing college, Claire and Apol transformed a memory of scarcity into a story of resilience.
