165 years ago, on June 19, 1861 a seemingly normal person was born at Calamba, Laguna. Dr. Jose Rizal, one of the leading factors that was responsible for driving the Filipino people to raise their arms against the Spanish forces.

This day was one of the momentous days that we must remember, and celebrate. Rizal Day isn't widely known by the masses yet, a seemingly regular day for all of us.

However, June 19 serves as a reminder that even an ordinary individual can create an extraordinary impact on a nation. Through his writings, intelligence, and unwavering love for the Philippines, Rizal inspired generations of Filipinos to fight for freedom, justice, and national identity. As we commemorate his birth, we should not only remember his achievements but also reflect on how we can embody his values in our daily lives and contribute to the betterment of our country.

Every June 12, we celebrate Philippine Independence Day, the day our nation declared its freedom from Spain in 1898.

For more than 300 years, Filipinos endured oppression and injustice under colonial rule. Yet despite the hardships, our ancestors remained brave and determined to fight for the freedom we enjoy today. Their sacrifices, courage, and unwavering love for the country paved the way for an independent Philippines.

From 1946 to 1961, the Philippines celebrated Independence Day on July 4. In 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal moved the celebration to June 12 to honor the original declaration of independence in 1898.

Let us remember and honor those who fought for our nation. May we continue to value the freedom they worked so hard to achieve and remain proud of the country we call home.

As you step out of the portal that has shaped you into the engineers you are today, take one last look at the place that witnessed your journeyโ€”the victories, the struggles, and everything in between.

It feels like only yesterday when drafting tables were crowded with unfinished plates, calculators never left your side, and deadlines seemed to arrive faster than expected. The long nights spent chasing solutions, the cups of coffee that fueled countless study sessions, and the moments of panic before examinations have now become stories worth telling.

Behind every hard-earned grade was a story of perseverance. Behind every accomplishment was a sacrifice unseen by many. There were moments when giving up seemed easier, yet you chose to continue. And that choice, repeated day after day, is what brought you here.

As one chapter closes, another begins. Beyond these walls lies a world waiting for your ideas, your creativity, and your determination. The future will present new challenges, but if your years in engineering have taught you anything, it is that no obstacle is too great for those willing to learn, adapt, and persevere.

Back when I was younger, I used to think that becoming an engineer meant certainty. I used to imagine hard hats and blueprints. Buildings rising from papers, and, of course, the pre-nominal โ€œ๐„๐ง๐ ๐ซ.โ€ right before my name. It all felt like a straight road. Dream. Study. Graduate. Success. Just like that, very simpleโ€”at least that is how I pictured it.

That was before I walked the crowded hallways of the College of Engineering. Before midnight, deadlines popped up on my screen. Before learning how expensive getting sleep could be. Before realizing that the hardest equations to solve were not the ones on paperโ€”but the quiet ones in my head.

I stood under the night sky and looked up. Beside me are the two people who somehow became an important part of my college story.

The three of us looked different now, far from what we had looked like when we first entered college. Now, weโ€™re older, matured, and tired in ways sleep could never fully fix. But standing. Still standing. And somehow, that feels enough.

โ€œOkay ka lang? Baโ€™t parang tahimik ka ngayon?โ€ Jasnah asked.

โ€œWala, may iniisip lang.โ€

โ€œFreshman? First year? First day?โ€ Arya asked with curiosity.

Suddenly a breeze passed by and memories of it came rushing back.

I still remember the first day I walked by the hallways of the College of Engineering. It felt too crowded. Everyone looked prepared like they already knew where to go and what to do. Meanwhile, I was standing there, pretending I wasnโ€™t sweating.

This is what I kept telling myself as I entered the room and sat down. A few seats away, Jasnah sat, preparing her notebook. While Arya, who sat in front of me, looked nervous, though pretending she wasnโ€™t while adjusting her chair.

Then, the professor walked in. And thatโ€™s when reality began.

There were quizzes I reviewed until dawn only to end up staring blankly at the paper.

There were formulas I memorized perfectly the night before but somehow forgot the second the exam started.

Grades felt heavier in college. Especially when you knew how hard you tried and when effort and results didnโ€™t always match.

Then there was money. The part nobody talks about enough. The kind of stress that follows you outside the classroom. There were days I checked my wallet and counted coins before commuting home. Days when I skipped merienda because I needed to print my thesis. Days when one hundred pesos had to last longer than it should.

Pamasahe. Printing. Food. Okay pa siguro โ€™to.

Some days, it was; some days, it wasnโ€™t. But somehow, we learned.

And thankfully, I never had to do it alone. Whenever I missed a class, Jasnah was always the first to lend me notes. Arya would stay after lectures to explain lessons again when we still didnโ€™t understand. We studied together, panicked together, and complained together. During the hardest weeks, we laughed so much it almost felt ridiculousโ€”but maybe that was exactly how we survived.

One time during third year, we stayed on campus later than usual. The engineering building was nearly empty. Papers were scattered around, writings on whiteboards that were still unfinished, and a chair had been left tipped over in the corner.

I leaned back and stared at the ceiling. โ€œ๐™‹๐™–๐™œ๐™ค๐™™ ๐™ฃ๐™– โ€™๐™ ๐™ค,โ€ I said before I could stop myself.

Jasnah laughed tiredly. โ€œSame.โ€

Arya smiled. โ€œVery same.โ€

And we laughed.

That kind of laugh you only understand when youโ€™ve gone through the same struggle together. Somehow, the room didnโ€™t feel so heavy anymore.

That was one of the biggest things engineering taught me. Sometimes it sounds like hearing โ€œkaya paโ€ from someone else when your own mind keeps saying โ€œhindi na.โ€

Then graduation cameโ€”faster than I expected, yet somehow slower than I wanted.

The stars above campus looked brighter than I remembered. The same stars we barely noticed after that exhausting 7 p.m. class. The same stars above us during exams, breakdowns, and impossible deadlines. But tonight, they felt different. Closer. Warmer. Like they had quietly watched everything.

I looked at Jasnah. Then Arya. And suddenly, everything made sense.

Arya pointed upward. โ€œAng ganda ng stars tonight, โ€™no?โ€

Jasnah smiled.

I laughed and looked up.

One by one, the stars filled the sky. And as I counted them, I realized something.

When I was younger, I thought engineering was simply about becoming an engineer. About earning the title. Reaching the finish line. Achieving the dream.

But standing here, beside the two people who stayed through every difficult day, I understand something more.

And now, when I count the stars, I no longer think about how far away they are. I think about how many nights they watched us try. How many times we almost gave upโ€”but didnโ€™t. How many times we kept going, even when we thought we couldnโ€™t anymore.

And somehow, under the same sky that once watched us wonder if we would ever make itโ€”we did.
