DOST-PNRI Introduces Nuclear Science and Technology to WMSU Engineering Students | March 25,27, 2025
The Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) visited Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) to hold a forum titled “Nuclear Science and Technology 101: Applications, Opportunities, and Challenges.” The event took place on March 25, 2025, at the College of Engineering - Audio Visual Room, with Environmental Engineering students as the invited participants. The forum showed the importance of using nuclear science in different fields and its potential effects.
Three DOST-PNRI experts spoke during the forum. Angelo A. Panlaqui discussed nuclear applications in energy, industry, and healthcare. Engr. Ronald E. Piquero explained radioactive waste management, while Dr. Casper B. Agaton tackled the challenges and opportunities of nuclear energy in the Philippines. They also answered questions in detail, clarifying its risks and benefits.
Following the forum, on March 27, 2025, the DOST-PNRI team held a field demonstration at the WMSU Open Field. They used a Portable Gamma Ray Spectrometer to measure natural radiation levels in the area. Students observed how the device detects radioactive elements and measures radiation doses in the environment, giving them practical experience with nuclear technology.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) for sharing their expertise and valuable insights. Through this collaboration, you inspired future engineers to explore the benefits and responsibilities of utilizing nuclear science in their future endeavors. Indeed, we will be having a generation of professionals instilled with the knowledge to advocate for safe and sustainable nuclear practices.
