On April 29, 2026, the Hospitality Management students of Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology conducted a seminar on Barista Skills and Coffee Appreciation in partnership with Exelient International Training Institute.
The activity was organized to provide students with additional knowledge and practical experience in coffee preparation, beverage service, and customer relations, which are essential skills in the hospitality industry.
The seminar aimed to develop the students’ competence, professionalism, and appreciation for the growing coffee culture and café operations.
The seminar began with an opening program followed by welcome remarks from representatives of both Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology and Exelient International Training Institute. The invited trainers and speakers discussed the fundamentals of barista skills, including proper espresso extraction, milk steaming, latte preparation, beverage presentation, and the operation of coffee-making equipment. They also highlighted the importance of hygiene, teamwork, and excellent customer service in the food and beverage industry.
A major part of the seminar focused on coffee appreciation, where participants learned about the history of coffee, different types of coffee beans, roasting processes, and coffee flavor profiles. The speakers explained the significance of understanding coffee quality and proper tasting techniques to enhance customer satisfaction and product knowledge. Through demonstrations and discussions, students gained a deeper appreciation of coffee as both a beverage and an important part of hospitality service.
The seminar also included hands-on activities and interactive workshops where students were given the opportunity to practice basic barista techniques under the supervision of professional trainers from Exelient Training Institute. The activities helped participants improve their confidence, and technical abilities in preparing and serving coffee beverages.
Overall, the seminar was a successful and meaningful learning experience for the Hospitality Management students of Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology.
