Computer Science faculty member Ms. Precious Opinion participated in the Asian Graduate Studies Summit held on May 26โ29, 2026, at Alta Dโ Tagaytay Hotel, Tagaytay City, with the theme, โFrom Research to Responsibility: Graduate Education, Innovation and Collective Action for Sustainable and Resilient Societies.โ
During the summit, Ms. Opinion presented her research study entitled โZamboanga City Fire Risk Data Dashboard and Maps: Using Data Analytics on Big Geographical Information System (GIS) Data Set.โ Her outstanding research earned the Best Research Paper Award under SDG 11 โ Sustainable Cities and Communities.
This remarkable achievement reflects her dedication to research excellence and her commitment to developing innovative and data-driven solutions that contribute to safer and more sustainable communities.

As tourism continues to create opportunities for innovative and forward-thinking Filipino youth, โAnyam,โ the Regional Winner of the Tourism Start-up Challenge, advanced to the national level competition held on May 11-12, 2026, in Quezon City. The initiative, a collaboration among the Department of Tourism (DOT), Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), awarded a total of PHP 19.25 million to 17 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
The Tourism Start-up Challenge is an annual nationwide competition that gathers students from HEIs with innovative tourism-related projects, providing them the opportunity to compete for funding under the Higher Education Development Fund (HEDF). Emerging as the regional winner, โAnyamโ proudly represented Region IX and Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) at the national selection, where the team showcased its innovative tourism initiative alongside fellow regional winners from across the Philippines. The AdZU team, in recognition of its achievement as regional winner, was awarded a โฑ250,000 grant.
Congratulations to the following Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) students who participated in the event: Gabrielle Tatel, Adrian Ranier Fabian, Donald Lee Novo, John Marco Antonio Yu, Jon Orillineda, Resham Qhaleed Kadiri, and Kenneth Clyde Que. Mr. Andrae Manguilimotan, a member of the Computer Science Department, coached the team.
Representing both the University and Region IX at the national level reflects the teamโs dedication, creativity, and commitment to innovation. The AdZU Computer Science Department, represented by Department Chair Ms. Fe Grace Canedo and faculty member Mr. Andre Manguilimotan, together with the Center for Digital and Blended Learning (CDBL) represented by Mr. Romeo Rabajante and Mr. Geoffrey Fabian, participated in CHED RAISE: Responding through AI for Societal Empowerment held on February 25โ27, 2026 at the Iloilo Convention Center in Iloilo City.
Organized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the summit centered on the responsible adoption of Artificial Intelligence, the promotion of human-centered learning, and the strengthening of multi-sectoral collaboration to ensure that technological advancements benefit all communities. The acronym RAISEโResponding through AI for Societal Empowermentโembodies CHEDโs vision of utilizing AI not merely for efficiency or modernization, but as a catalyst for nation-building and social equity. The initiative aims to empower institutions, educators, and learners to effectively navigate and respond to the demands of the digital era.
The three-day summit featured plenary sessions and breakout discussions, providing participants with meaningful engagement alongside experts from academia, industry, and government. These sessions encouraged dialogue on ethical AI integration, inclusive innovation, and collaborative strategies for sustainable development.
During the event, Team AdZU showcased selected student works and projects, highlighting their innovative application of AI in developing practical IT solutions. The exhibit underscored the studentsโ capability and readiness to embrace emerging technologies in addressing real-world challenges.
Participation in CHED RAISE 2026 not only strengthened institutional partnerships but also further equipped the members with valuable insights and perspectives on leveraging AI for impact-driven innovation.

AdZU Computer Science students Gabrielle Tatel, Adrian Ranier Fabian, Donald Lee Novo, John Marco Antonio Yu, Jon Orillineda, and Resham Qhaleed Kadiri were named Regional Winners at the Tourism Start-Up Challenge 2025, with the awarding ceremony held on February 23, 2026, at the Convention Center of Garden Orchid Hotel.
Their winning concept, โAnyam,โ evolved from a LITMIN summer class project into a tourism-focused platform that promotes cultural learning, local experiences, and visits to underrepresented communities.
The Tourism Start-Up Challenge 2025 is organized by the Department of Tourism (DOT) in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), recognizing innovative student solutions that contribute to strengthening the countryโs tourism sector.
The award was received on behalf of the team by Ms. Crizel Cardenas and Ms. Jennifer Reyes during the CHED Region IX Coordination Meeting and Reorientation.
The CS Department is proud of this success and commends the students and their adviser, Mr. Andre Manguilimotan, for this outstanding achievement.
