Statement of the Young Moro Professionals Network on the Marcos LNMB Burial

There is no darker period in our recent history than the Martial Law era. There is hardly any Bangsamoro family that was left untouched by death and grief during the Marcos dictatorship. To this day, we carry with us stories of men killed in mosques, women r***d in villages, and children left orphaned by countless human rights violations across the region and all throughout Mindanao during the term of the late Ferdinand Marcos.

Today, the man who set the wheels of Martial Law in motion was buried in a place supposedly reserved for people who have faithfully served our country. This is a man who buried us in debt and left us mourning our dead as he stole from the country's coffers and pillaged our nation for more than 20 years.

We decry the burial of the late dictator, Ferdinand Marcos, in the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani.

Our elders passed on their account of history to us so we can learn from it, and our history is replete with stories of how Martial Law has changed the lives of our people. To deny that these atrocities happened and to forget the suffering it has caused is to betray our history as people who fought for freedom from the dark days of dictatorship. That he was buried in an attempt to force our people to move on and to forget is inconsolable and unforgivable.

Nothing can change history. Nothing can change the truth. Marcos is no hero.

Statement of the Young Moro Professionals Network

Dr. Pipalawan Macacua. He was a government employee who worked on scholarships for Moro National Liberation (MNLF) front communities. He was a Moro, a Muslim and was one of the 14 people who lost their lives last night after a bomb explosion in Davao City. 67 are now recovering from injuries inflicted by this cowardly act.

We, the Young Moro Professionals Network (YMPN), condemn in the highest degree this senseless act of violence. While no one or group has claimed responsibility, reports point once again to radical groups who only want to sow fear and mistrust among the people.

We call on the rest of the Muslim Ummah to be more discerning and prudent whenever these so-called groups urge us to fight for Islam. They use words like jihad but at the same time taint and disgrace Islam by their reckless acts of terrorism. Over the years, groups like the Abu Sayyaf who have used violence to the point of killing innocent people, have not ever shown the heart and action of a true "mujahideen."

Moreover, their actions have pushed the government to take offensive actions in Sulu where it has affected the many lives of peace-loving Muslims. Our children cannot go to their schools, our farmers forced to abandon their lands, our fisher folks unable to sell their catch. In the long run, it is the Moros, our Muslim brothers and sisters who will suffer.

The cornerstone of Islam is Peace. The values of the Qur'an holds us Muslims responsible for treating all people, Muslims or Non-Muslims, kindly, justly, with love, mercy and compassion. Such values that prevent acts of mischief - mischief comprises all forms of anarchy and terror that deprive comfort, security and peace amongst people.

We have said it before and we will tirelessly continue to say it again, these acts represent everything that is against the values of Islam and the teachings of the Quran.

As for the rest of the Filipino people, most especially the strong people of Davao, of Sulu and the rest of Mindanao, we call for sobriety and we pray for healing. We call for peace. We call for love, not hate. We call for justice. May the Almighty help us as we take on this path of building a peaceful nation.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

The Philippine-American Educational Foundation (PAEF) seeks a PROGRAM OFFICER to work collaboratively in the management and implementation of the Foundation’s programs and activities, in particular, the Fulbright Program and other educational exchange initiatives. PAEF is a non-profit, Fulbright binational commission that promotes mutual understanding between the peoples of the Philippines and the United States through international educational exchanges.

Essential Qualifications:
1) Extensive knowledge of and experience with higher education in the United States and the Philippines;
2) Excellent written & oral communication skills; strong presentation skills;
3) Ability to interact respectfully with people of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and cultures;
4) Commitment to excellence; well-organized; self-motivated; team player and ability to manage multiple tasks and timetables while maintaining focus;
5) Solid background and experienced in using traditional and social media platforms, including active use of FaceBook and Twitter to aggressively promote the Fulbright Program and other PAEF initiatives (knowledge in HTML is a plus); ability to learn and adopt new computer programs; facility to effectively integrate that technology into daily work; and ability to use electronic and social media to connect with Fulbright alumni;
6) Capacity to use online or digital marketing to maintain brand awareness, target specific audiences, sustain social networks, and expand outreach;
7) Education: A bachelor’s degree in social or development studies, education, American Studies, or related field; Advanced degree will be an added advantage; and
8) Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience at the national or international level as project/program officer.

The program officer assists in managing the recruitment of applicants for PAEF programs. The program officer plans for and conducts Fulbright/PAEF outreach activities and liaises with the US Embassy Manila. S/he works closely with managers of PAEF cooperating agencies based in the US with regards to the administration of various exchange initiatives. The successful candidate provides technological know-how in designing PAEF annual report and other announcements and maintaining the PAEF website, social media accounts, and keeping abreast with other computer application programs. S/he leads the conduct of pre-departure orientation for US-bound Filipino scholars and briefing of US scholars.
