The Department of Social Sciences and Physical Education envisions that the students, faculty, and staff of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Senior High School are peace-oriented citizens by being…
1. …progressive in their critical thinking skills to be problem solvers and agents of social change;
2. …enhanced in their cultural sensitivity that we may promote a society that does not subject itself to biases and prejudices but well-calibrated in the service of God and country;
3. …appreciative of one’s past, present, and future that they may be nation-builders and competent members of our Filipino society;
4. …cultivated in their physical and mental well-being so they may revive their inactive living trends; and
5. …educated about the realities of our society to liberate and enlighten them in the understanding of the political and social landscape of Zamboanga City, Mindanao, and of the Republic. MISSION
The Department of Social Sciences and Physical Education is committed in leading the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Senior High School of achieving its goals and aspirations in using Filipino and Jesuit values in promoting physical fitness, appreciating and actively preserving our local arts and heritage, inculcating the values of teamwork in the name of sports and enjoyment, and advocating the culture of peace and inclusive nation-building. The department’s mission extends to the students of the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand in working with them in spearheading social transformation, generating critical and thought-provoking ideas, providing political solutions, conducting relevant and timely social science researches, fostering inter-religious dialogue, and engaging communities. SUBJECTS OFFERED
The Department of Social Sciences and Physical Education is composed of two divisions: the Social Sciences (SS) Squad and the Physical Education (PE) Crew. The SS Squad, headed by the HUMSS Chief Specialist, handles various specialized subjects of the HUMSS strand such as:
(1) Philippine Politics and Governance;
(2) Disciplines and Ideas in the Social Sciences;
(3) Disciplines and Ideas in the Applied Social Sciences;
(4) Introduction to World Religions and Belief Systems;
(5) Community Engagement, Solidarity, and Citizenship; and
(6) Trends, Networks, and Critical Thinking in the 21st Century. Additionally, the Squad teaches two core subjects in the social sciences that is offered to all strands of the AdZU-SHS:
[1] Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions, and
[2] Understanding Culture, Society, and Politics. The PE Crew, headed by the Vice-Chairperson for Physical Education, handles Physical Education and Health (PEH) subjects that is offered to all strands of the AdZU-SHS:
[1] Exercise for Fitness;
[2] Sports;
[3] Dance; and
[4] Recreational Activities.
