In commemoration of National Flag Day on May 28, 2026, the Universidad de Zamboanga (UZ) held the Ceremonial Retirement of the Philippine Flag at the UZ Open Grounds, Main Campus, Tetuan, Zamboanga City.

A worn-out Philippine flag, in accordance with Section 14 of Republic Act No. 8491 or the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, shall be solemnly and ceremoniously burned to prevent its desecration.

As the flag was lowered by the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) Unit, the Lupang Hinirang was sung, followed by Bayan Ko, a song symbolizing love for country and patriotism.

Taking on the role of Inang Bayan, School of Criminal Justice (SCJ) Dean Dr. Emily Sarte carried the worn-out flag to its formal retirement through burning.

The Flag Retirement Ceremony gives utmost respect and honor to the Philippine Flag, emphasizing the ideals and history it embodies and represents. Through this ceremony, worn-out flags are not misused in any way but are instead honored with dignity.

The event stood as a solemn tribute to nationalism and pride in identity, ideals that UZ remains committed to upholding.

The Universidad de Zamboanga (UZ) inked a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) – Zamboanga on May 26, 2026.

The MOA highlights the extension of the exhibit “Zamboanga Encounters: Where Land and Sea Meet” until October, as well as the partnership between UZ and NMP – Zamboanga in hosting the 2026 Regional Heritage Forum, which will gather researchers to present studies related to history and heritage conservation efforts.

Through the Centre for Local History and Culture – El Kaban de Zamboanga, UZ reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the Zamboangueño identity and heritage through historical research, cultural initiatives, and the conservation of valuable memorabilia and narratives of the region.

Signing on behalf of UZ was University President Mr. Abram Eustaquio, while Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Director II of the Mindanao National Museums, Ms. Marianathe Kay Misa, signed on behalf of NMP – Zamboanga.

In his message, Mr. Abram Eustaquio shared that Fort Pilar, originally built for war, has now become a symbol of peace, religiosity, culture, and the arts, a complete opposite of what it stands for today. He emphasized that UZ, in its full commitment to preserving local history and culture, continues to work hand in hand with institutions that uphold the same advocacy.

Concurrently, the new exhibit Spirit in Nature, featuring artworks from local artists was opened featuring their artworks representing the natural beauty of the region.

With Love of Country as one of its core aspirations and agendas, UZ continues to uplift the local history and heritage of Zamboanga, encouraging researchers and historians to contribute to a culture shaped by a rich and enduring history.

The Universidad de Zamboanga (UZ), through the Arturo Eustaquio Libraries and Information Centre (AELIC), conducted an educational tour of its modern library facilities for the Zamboanga City Library personnel, coordinators, facilitators, and learners on May 22, 2026, at the UZ Main Campus, Tetuan.

The library visit formed part of the Educational Tour organized by the City Library under its 2026 Summer Program, which aims to promote literacy and reading initiatives, expose learners to academic and school libraries, and support free reading tutorials for Grade 3–7 learners in Zamboanga City.

UZ is open to visitors who wish to explore its modern library, a welcoming space for knowledge, learning, and excellence.
